Dog Swimming in Cardiff: Where Not to Swim, Where to Walk by the Water and Where to Go Instead

Small white dog on a blue lead

Cardiff is a city of rivers and a bay, and a lot of dog owners assume that means somewhere to swim. It mostly doesn’t. There is no sea beach in the city, and two of the best-known stretches of water carry explicit no-swimming notices. So this page is a guide to walking your dog beside Cardiff’s water, plus the nearest places to go when a swim is the plan.

1. Bute Park and the River Taff

Bute Park’s rules say dogs are welcome although there are some places where they should be on a lead, and that tombstoning and swimming are prohibited at Blackweir Bridge. The park also warns that cold water shock can kill. Keep your dog on the bank here.

2. Cardiff Bay and the barrage

Cardiff Harbour Authority’s water-safety page says jumping and swimming in the Bay are not allowed because of the risk of drowning. The waterside paths are fine for a walk with your dog on a lead; just leave the water to the boats.

3. Hendre Lake Park – St Mellons

Address: St Mellons, Cardiff CF3 0RG
Google rating: 4.3 (582 reviews)

Outdoor Cardiff describes this as a fishing lake managed by Club FAW, with fishing platforms. It says nothing about dogs or swimming, and anglers use the banks, so keep your dog on a lead and out of the water.

Not recommended: Radyr Weir – River Taff

Address: 1 Heol Isaf, Radyr, Cardiff CF15 8AF
Google rating: 4.7 (27 reviews)
View on Google Maps

A Google reviewer says they took their dog swimming here. We couldn’t find any official dog or swimming rule, and a paddlers’ listing says the weir can become dangerous in higher water after heavy rain. For that reason we’re not recommending it as a swimming spot; if you walk past, keep your dog clear of the weir.

Where to go for a proper swim

The nearest sea is in the Vale of Glamorgan, a short drive away. Our Vale of Glamorgan dog swimming guide covers the beaches the council lists as dog-friendly, and many are closed to dogs in summer. Further west, see our Swansea dog swimming guide for Gower. The UK dog swimming guide has more.

Busy city walks

Riverside paths in Cardiff are busy, so a reliable recall matters; there’s a Cardiff dog trainer directory to help. Calmshops stocks the Calmdogs calming collar as a complementary option alongside training; it isn’t a medicine, so speak to your vet if you’re worried. Find a vet through best vets in Cardiff, and see dog services in Cardiff for the rest.
