Best Dog Swimming Spots in City of Edinburgh: Beaches, Bays and Careful Walks

A wet dog running on a rocky beach

Edinburgh is not the first place people think of for a dog paddle, but the Firth of Forth shoreline gives you a few options, and a few places where we would simply keep walking. We have checked what the official sources say. For the City of Edinburgh we could not find a council page that sets out dog rules for the beaches themselves, so where something is unconfirmed we say so. Signs on the day always win, and the sea here is cold, even in summer.

1. Portobello Beach – Portobello

Address: Portobello Beach, 1 Promenade, Edinburgh EH15 2DX
Google rating: 4.6 (6,966 reviews)
View on Google Maps

Portobello is Edinburgh’s classic seaside stretch. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) lists Portobello Central and Portobello West as “Sufficient” for its 2026 bathing water classification, with the bathing season running 1 June to 15 September. SEPA advises against bathing during and for one to two days after heavy rain, and its beach profiles ask dog owners to clear up any fouling. We could not confirm any council dog restriction or dog-swimming guidance for this beach, so look out for signs on the day. Check SEPA’s bathing water pages before you go.

2. Wardie Bay – Granton

Address: 92 Lower Granton Rd, Edinburgh EH5 1ER
Google rating: 4.6 (578 reviews)
View on Google Maps

A quieter option on the same coast. SEPA classifies Wardie Bay as “Good” for 2026, and the same rain advice and request to clear up fouling apply to its profile. As with Portobello, we found no council rule specific to dogs here. If your dog is a keen swimmer, take it steady, keep them close and choose a calm day.

3. Cramond Beach – Cramond

Address: Cramond, Edinburgh EH4 6NU
Google rating: 4.7 (2,028 reviews)
View on Google Maps

Cramond is lovely for a walk, but we would not treat it as a swimming spot. It does not appear among SEPA’s classified bathing waters, and the tide is the real concern. The RNLI warned in April 2026 of the risk to people crossing the causeway to Cramond Island, so check tide times before you walk out and never let a dog chase anything across. One visitor guide to the nearby Dalmeny Estate shore says dogs must be kept on leads because of free-roaming cattle and sheep; we could not confirm this from an official page, so follow signs.

4. Duddingston Loch – Duddingston

Address: Duddingston Loch, Duddingston, Edinburgh EH15 3PX
Google rating: 4.8 (45 reviews)
View on Google Maps

This one is for a walk by the water, not a swim. We found no site-specific rule, but the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s general guidance on dogs and wildlife asks for a short lead or close control in the breeding season, and close control at all times where wildfowl overwinter.

Staying safe and considerate

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code says access rights apply while your dog is under proper control, and asks for a short lead or keeping dogs at heel in the April to July breeding season on moorland, forests, grassland, and loch and sea shores (see the official dog walkers page). In fresh water, Scottish Canals says people and dogs should avoid entering the water altogether if blue-green algae is present. We found no Edinburgh-specific algae warnings, but we would still check signs. Not sure whether your dog is fit for a swim? Speak to your vet.

We could not confirm council beach rules for Portobello, Cramond, Silverknowes or Seafield, or rules for the Water of Leith and Union Canal, so please check signs and the council’s latest pages. Details come from Google, SEPA and other sources, and can change.

Before and after your outing

Rinse off salt or sand, and dry your dog well. If you are looking at everyday extras for your dog’s routine, you can browse Calmshops, but speak to your vet first. See our Edinburgh vets guide, the City of Edinburgh dog services hub and our UK dog swimming guide.
