Neath Port Talbot has a long beach and some famous waterfalls, and both need a careful read before you bring a dog. Aberavon’s main beach is closed to dogs in summer, and Waterfall Country’s official safety notes are among the most serious we came across. Here’s what the sources say.
1. Aberavon (Port Talbot) Beach
Address: Port Talbot Beach, Sandfields East, Port Talbot SA12 6JN
Google rating: 4.6 (180 reviews)

Neath Port Talbot Council says dogs are prohibited from the main section of Aberavon Beach between 1 May and 30 September each year; about half the beach is restricted and half is dog-friendly. Leads are required on the promenade in summer. The current order came into force on 6 March 2024 and lasts three years. In June 2026 the council opened a consultation on replacing it, keeping the same beach dates and asking whether the promenade lead rule should apply all year. We couldn’t find the outcome, so check the council’s page. We couldn’t read the map showing which half is dog-friendly, so check the signs on arrival.
2. The Small Beach – Port Talbot
Address: Port Talbot SA12 6AN
Google rating: 4.8 (26 reviews)

Reviewers describe this as a small, sandy beach that is dog friendly all year, with hardly any shingle. That’s reviewer information, not the council’s, and we couldn’t confirm which zone it falls in. Another reviewer says it connects to Aberavon beach on a roughly 2.5km walk in the months when dogs are allowed.
3. Waterfall Country – Pontneddfechan
Address: 2 High St, Pontneddfechan, Glynneath SA11 5NP
Google rating: 4.8 (1,867 reviews)

Natural Resources Wales says the woodlands straddle the borders of Powys, Neath Port Talbot and Rhondda Cynon Taf. It says serious accidents do happen and there have been several fatalities in recent years. The Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority says rivers may look appealing but entering the water needs the greatest care, and temperatures can be very low, risking cold water shock. Some reviewers describe dogs taking a dip. We can’t recommend that, and we found no official dog rule. Treat it as a walk, with your dog on a lead near drops and water.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can dogs go on Aberavon Beach in summer?
Only on part of it. Neath Port Talbot Council says dogs are prohibited from the main section between 1 May and 30 September each year, with about half the beach restricted and half dog-friendly. We couldn’t read the map showing which half, so check the signs on arrival.
Do dogs need to be on a lead on the Aberavon promenade?
In summer, yes. The council says leads are required on the promenade in the restricted period. The council opened a consultation in June 2026 on replacing the order, including whether the lead rule should apply all year, and we couldn’t find the outcome, so check the council’s current page before you go.
Is Waterfall Country safe for dogs to swim?
We can’t recommend it. Natural Resources Wales says serious accidents do happen, with several fatalities in recent years, and the national park authority warns of cold water shock. We found no official dog rule, so treat it as a walk with your dog on a lead near drops and water.
Is the Small Beach in Port Talbot dog friendly all year?
Reviewers describe it that way, but that is reviewer information, not the council’s, and we couldn’t confirm which dog zone it falls in. Check the signs before you let your dog off the lead.
