Aberdeen doesn’t get talked about as much as Edinburgh or Glasgow when it comes to dog-friendly breaks, but Figo and I have found the Granite City has a genuine welcome for dogs once you know where to look — a couple of proper hotels, a dog park at a nearby holiday park, and a real shortage the moment you look for a self-catering cottage inside the city itself. I went looking for options I could actually stand behind with a named, checkable source, rather than copying a “pet-friendly” badge from a booking site and hoping it still applies.
I’ll be upfront: Aberdeen is a compact city, and genuine in-city supply across hotels, camping and self-catering is unevenly spread. Where there wasn’t enough inside the city boundary to recommend honestly, I’ve pointed you a short drive out into Aberdeenshire instead, flagged clearly as “just over the boundary” rather than blurred into the main list. If you’re arriving without your own car, our guide to pet transport in Aberdeen covers the checked, DEFRA-registered options for getting your dog there and back.
Dog-friendly hotels and pub-inns in Aberdeen
Aberdeen’s hotel scene has a couple of genuinely dog-friendly options confirmed either on the hotel’s own site or a specialist pet-travel directory — but several well-known names either don’t publish a dog policy at all or turned out, on checking, not to apply to Aberdeen.
- Macdonald Norwood Hall Hotel, Garthdee Road, Aberdeen, AB11 9FX — dogs welcome in any room, no limit on size or number, for a £20-per-night charge payable at reception (guide dogs stay free), plus an on-site exercise area. - Thainstone House (Crerar Hotels), Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, AB51 5NT (a 20–25 minute drive north-west of the city centre, just outside the city boundary) — well-behaved dogs welcome in all guest rooms, plus reception, the lounge and the grounds, on a lead. A £25-per-dog, per-night charge covers extra cleaning; guide/assistance dogs stay free. The hotel is upfront that it can’t guarantee the grounds are fully dog-proof. What we checked but left out: BrewDog Kennels, Aberdeen was widely reported in 2018–19 press as a dog-themed “mini hotel,” but BrewDog’s own current hotels page lists only Edinburgh, Manchester and Columbus (Ohio) — no Aberdeen property survives, so we’ve left it out rather than pass on an outdated opening announcement as current fact. The Chester Hotel on Queen’s Road is a well-regarded boutique city-centre option, but its own site doesn’t state a dog policy anywhere we could find, so it’s not listed as confirmed. We also couldn’t find any genuinely dog-friendly pub-inn with rooms inside Aberdeen city itself with a published, checkable pet policy — this category is thin for the city and we’re not padding it with guesses.
Dog-friendly camping and glamping
Aberdeen city itself has very little camping supply of any kind. The nearest genuine, verifiable option sits just over the city boundary in Aberdeenshire:
- Deeside Holiday Park (just over the boundary, Aberdeenshire) — South Deeside Road, Maryculter, Aberdeen, AB12 5FX, a few miles south-west of the city centre across the River Dee. Listed as dog-friendly year-round, with an on-site dog park and a dog-walking area. No fee or number/size limit is published — worth confirming directly before booking. Pitchup.com listing · View on Google Maps. Verified 18 Oct 2026.
What we checked but left out: Aden Caravan and Camping in Mintlaw turned up on Pitchup with a self-contradicting listing — tagged “dogs allowed” with a dog park, but its own FAQ answers “Is Aden Caravan and Camping dog friendly?” with a flat “No.” The operator’s own site has no stated pet policy at all, so we’ve left it out until that’s confirmed in writing. It’s also over 30 miles from Aberdeen, too far to count as “just over the boundary” regardless.
Self-catering cottages
Genuine dog-friendly self-catering inside the city of Aberdeen itself is very thin on the ground on the major agencies’ own listings. Searching Sykes Cottages’ Aberdeen city listings directly, the one city-centre property with a clear pet marking — Footdee Cottage, in the historic Footdee (Fittie) area — is explicitly marked “pets: no,” so it’s excluded. One Sykes listing on the outskirts of Aberdeen is marked pet-friendly, but the location given is only approximate rather than a checkable address, so we’re not citing it as a confirmed, named option. Both Sykes Cottages and Canine Cottages do list genuine dog-friendly self-catering across Aberdeenshire, the wider county — real supply if you’re happy to drive 20 minutes or more out of the city, though we’ve not named individual properties here without being able to pin down a confirmed in-city option first. Sykes Cottages’ own Aberdeen city listings page and Canine Cottages’ Aberdeen search page. Verified 18 Oct 2026.
What to check before you book a dog-friendly stay in Aberdeen
- Always confirm the dog fee and the maximum number of dogs directly with the property — a “dog friendly” tag on a listing site doesn’t guarantee the fee or limit shown there is current.
- Ask whether there are dog-free areas (restaurants, certain room types) so you’re not caught out on arrival.
- If you’re happy to stay just outside the city, Aberdeenshire has noticeably more genuine supply across all three categories than the city itself.
- Pack familiar bedding, food and water from home so a new environment feels less unsettling for your dog, and bring something to help them settle in — we always travel with Calmshops’ 8-in-1 daily multivitamin chews as part of Figo’s travel routine.
- If your dog has an existing health condition, speak to your vet before travelling, especially for longer journeys or a change of routine — our list of the best vets in Aberdeen City is worth bookmarking in case you need one while you’re here.
Are there dog-friendly hotels in Aberdeen itself?
Yes, though the choice is narrow — Macdonald Norwood Hall Hotel on Garthdee Road has a published, checkable dog policy (£20/night, no size or number limit). We couldn’t confirm a dog-friendly pub-inn with rooms inside the city itself.
Can I find dog-friendly camping or a cottage inside Aberdeen city?
Not genuinely, no. Camping and self-catering supply inside the Aberdeen City boundary is very thin on the ground; the nearest verified options (Deeside Holiday Park for camping, and wider Aberdeenshire listings for cottages) sit just over the boundary.
Why aren’t more Aberdeen hotels listed here?
Because we only list what we can verify. BrewDog’s dog-themed Aberdeen hotel closed some years ago despite still being mentioned in older press coverage, and at least one well-regarded boutique hotel (The Chester Hotel) doesn’t publish a dog policy either way — we’d rather leave a gap than guess.
