Dog-Friendly Accommodation in Tyne and Wear

Dog indoors in a bright, dog-friendly room

Tyne and Wear has a good spread of hotels that take dogs, from the coast to the city centre, but fees and rules are often unpublished. We’ve called a place confirmed only where its own page, or its chain’s official page, says so, and flagged where details conflict.

Coastal inns with a stated fee

The Inn Collection Group’s Tynemouth Castle Inn, Grand Parade, Tynemouth NE30 4JQ, and Seaburn Inn, Whitburn Road, Seaburn, Sunderland SR6 8AA, both charge £15 per night for up to two dogs when booked direct, and the dog must be added at booking. Dogs are allowed in designated pub and restaurant areas and can’t be left unattended in bedrooms. The pages are inconsistent about which rooms take dogs (garden and terrace rooms at Tynemouth; all categories or floors one and two at Seaburn), so ring reservations on 0191 580 3610 to confirm.

Travelodge and IHG hotels

Travelodge’s own page for Newcastle Whitemare Pool (Wardley, near Gateshead, NE10 8YB) says “pet-friendly rooms available”, with no fee or limit stated. IHG’s official pet-friendly listing says “Pets Allowed” for Holiday Inn Washington (in Sunderland), Staybridge Suites Newcastle, Crowne Plaza Newcastle Stephenson Quarter, Holiday Inn Express Newcastle City Centre and Holiday Inn Express Newcastle Gateshead, but IHG says fees and policies vary by hotel, so check the specific hotel for the fee and number of dogs.

A contradiction to know about

The Roker Hotel in Sunderland carries a “pet-friendly” feature tag on the Best Western site, but its FAQ on the same site says “Pets are not accepted”. We haven’t listed it as dog-friendly unless the hotel confirms.

Needs a direct check

The NewcastleGateshead visitor board’s dog-friendly list says Hilton Newcastle Gateshead welcomes dogs for a small charge, that Malmaison Newcastle on the Quayside has some dog-friendly rooms (01913 898627), and tags Motel One, Sandman Signature and Grey Street Hotel as dog-friendly. It also tags other Travelodges (Gateshead, Newcastle Airport, Gosforth, Quayside). That’s a destination board rather than the hotels themselves, so confirm before you book. We couldn’t load Premier Inn’s UK pet policy this round, so check it directly. Self-catering and campsites, including Whitley Bay Holiday Park and the National Trust’s Gibside cottages, appear on dog-friendly lists, but we haven’t confirmed their policies.

Gaps and border cases

We verified nothing in South Tyneside (South Shields, Jarrow, Hebburn) and no pub with rooms or cottage agency. South Causey Inn, which appears on some lists, is in County Durham, and Cramlington, Wallington and Langley Castle are in Northumberland, so we’ve left them out. Washington is part of Sunderland, so the Holiday Inn there counts.

A new room and a long day out can unsettle a nervier dog. A calming bite before you travel can help take the edge off the first night away. If your dog is regularly anxious away from home, that is worth a word with your vet.
