Dog-Friendly Pubs, Cafés & Restaurants in Hampshire

CAMRA’s own pub listings are our main source here — their “Dog Friendly” facility tag is a genuine fact rather than marketing. Across Hampshire we confirmed 24 pubs this way, with the New Forest towns living up to their reputation. Cafés and restaurants, as in most counties we’ve researched, are a much weaker category — only one cleared our bar for a confirmed, named source.

New Forest towns

  • Forest Lodge Hotel, Pikes Hill, Lyndhurst, SO43 7AS.
  • Foresters Arms, 10 Brookley Road, and Huntsman of Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst Road, both Brockenhurst.
  • Fisherman’s Rest, All Saints Road, Lymington.
  • Railway, Hightown Road, and The Pour House, West Street, both Ringwood.

All CAMRA dog-friendly. The Ringwood Brewery tap is closed long-term, so we’ve left it out.

Winchester

  • Bakers Arms, 22 High Street; Golden Lion, 99 Alresford Road; St James Tavern, 3 Romsey Road — all CAMRA dog-friendly.
  • Winchester Cathedral Café, Cathedral Close, SO23 9JP — the one café in this whole batch with a clear, business-confirmed policy: companion and guide dogs allowed inside, all dogs welcome in the courtyard.

Southampton and Portsmouth

  • Guide Dog, 38 Earl’s Road; Dog & Duck, 108 Shirley Road; Rover, 266 Shirley Road — all Southampton, all CAMRA dog-friendly (yes, all three happen to have dog-themed names — a coincidence we noticed, not a sign of a wider pattern).
  • Still & West, Bath Square, Old Portsmouth; Bridge Tavern, East Street, Old Portsmouth; Eastney Tavern, Cromwell Road, Eastney; Vaults (also listed historically as Wine Vaults — same venue), Albert Road, Southsea — all CAMRA dog-friendly.

A specific flag for Portsmouth: several pubs widely named as dog-friendly in tourism round-ups (Florence Arms, Dolphin, Jolly Roger, Porters, The Deco) don’t carry a CAMRA dog-friendly tag and couldn’t be matched to any confirming source — we’ve left them out rather than repeat an unconfirmed claim.

Gosport, Fareham and Eastleigh

  • Gipsy Queen, Whitworth Road; Queens Hotel, Queens Road, Forton; New Inn, Melville Road, Hardway — all Gosport, CAMRA dog-friendly.
  • Castle in the Air, Old Gosport Road, and Golden Lion, High Street, both Fareham, CAMRA dog-friendly.
  • Cricketers Arms, Chestnut Avenue, Eastleigh — the only verified venue for the town.

Romsey, Basingstoke, Andover, Aldershot and beyond

  • Old House at Home, Love Lane, Romsey — one of the few venues in the county with specific policy wording on its CAMRA listing: dogs allowed in the main bar with permission.
  • New Inn, Sarum Hill, Basingstoke — the only currently-open verified pub in the town (BrewDog Basingstoke is closed long-term).
  • Lardicake, Adelaide Road, Andover, and White Hart, Penton Mewsey (just outside Andover) — both CAMRA dog-friendly.
  • Golden Lion, High Street, and Crimea Inn, Crimea Road, both Aldershot — CAMRA dog-friendly.
  • Townhouse, High Street, Petersfield, and Eight Bells, Church Street, Alton — both CAMRA dog-friendly.

One important catch worth knowing: a “White Hart” and “Bulls Head” that turn up in a search for Alton pubs are actually in Alton, Staffordshire, near Alton Towers — not Alton, Hampshire. We’ve made sure everything above is genuinely in the right county.

Honest gap: Farnborough came back with zero verified venues — the one plausible candidate we checked (a pub inside the Village Hotel complex) explicitly lacks the dog-friendly tag. Cafés and restaurants are the weak category everywhere except Winchester; despite the New Forest’s reputation for dog-friendliness, we couldn’t confirm a single café or restaurant there to the same standard as its pubs.

Dog relaxing beside a table at a dog-friendly Hampshire pub

A pub after a long New Forest walk is a lovely way to end the day, but a tired, keyed-up dog can still get snappy indoors. A calming collar or treat can help settle things for the last stretch. For ongoing reactivity around people or other dogs, it’s worth talking to your vet or a trainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dog-friendly pub in Farnborough?

We couldn’t confirm one. The one plausible candidate we checked explicitly lacks CAMRA’s dog-friendly tag, so this is a genuine gap rather than an oversight.

Where’s best for a dog-friendly café in Hampshire?

Winchester Cathedral Café is the clearest example we found, with an explicit policy covering both the café interior and courtyard. Elsewhere in the county, confirmed café coverage is thin.

Is the “White Hart, Alton” pub actually in Hampshire?

Not necessarily — there’s a same-named pub in Alton, Staffordshire, near Alton Towers, that gets confused with the Hampshire town. We’ve double-checked everything in this guide is the right Alton.
