Dog-Friendly Pubs, Cafés & Restaurants in Hertfordshire

A dog sitting at a pub bar next to its owner, illustrating a dog-friendly pub in Manchester

Our main source is CAMRA’s own pub listings, which carry dog-friendliness as a genuine facility tag. Pub coverage is reasonably solid across most of the twelve towns we checked, with one exception — Royston came back with zero confirmed dog-friendly pubs after every candidate turned out closed, untagged, or a private members’ club. Cafés and restaurants are a total gap: across the whole county we found no venue with its own confirmed dog policy, only generic aggregator listicles that don’t meet our bar.

  • Chequers Beer House, 164 High Street, Stevenage, SG1 3LL; Our Mutual Friend, Broadwater Crescent, SG2 8EH; Dun Cow, 32 Letchmore Road, SG1 3PR; Marquis of Lorne, 132 High Street, SG1 3DB — all CAMRA dog-friendly tag.

Royston: a genuine zero

We couldn’t confirm a single dog-friendly pub currently trading in Royston. The White Bear used to carry the CAMRA tag but has been closed long-term since 2014 and converted to housing; the Chequers Hotel closed as a pub in 2020 and reopened as a Thai restaurant; and the Royston Social Club, while open, is a private members’ club rather than a genuinely public pub, so it’s excluded on that basis regardless of its dog policy.

Cafés and restaurants are a complete gap right across the county — every town, zero verified. That’s not us missing something: the only sources that surfaced were generic aggregator round-ups that don’t cite a venue’s own confirmed policy, which doesn’t meet our bar.

Dog relaxing beside a table at a dog-friendly pub

A busy pub on a Friday night is a lot of new smells and noise to take in calmly. Figo settles once he’s found his spot under the table, but a calming collar or treat can take the edge off those first ten minutes if yours needs a bit of extra help. If the anxiety doesn’t ease with familiarity, that’s worth raising with your vet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dog-friendly pub in Royston?

We couldn’t confirm one currently trading. The one CAMRA-tagged candidate closed long ago and is now housing, the town’s other former pub is now a Thai restaurant, and the only open members-style venue is a private social club, not a public pub.

Is there a dog-friendly café or restaurant in Hertfordshire?

We couldn’t verify one anywhere in the county. Every lead we found was a generic aggregator listicle rather than a venue’s own confirmed dog policy, so this is a genuine gap rather than an oversight.

Which Hertfordshire towns have the best dog-friendly pub coverage?

Hertford and St Albans, each with around 5 confirmed CAMRA-tagged venues. Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin, Letchworth and Hoddesdon/Broxbourne each have only one confirmed pub.
