Our main source is CAMRA’s own pub listings, cross-checked against the Isle of Wight CAMRA branch’s own “Dogs in Pubs” page — the two disagreed on at least one venue, so every entry below is confirmed against CAMRA’s official page, not just the local branch list. Pub coverage is solid across most of the island. Cafés and restaurants are close to a total gap: only one weak lead turned up anywhere, a single dated customer review, not a venue’s own stated policy.
Newport, Ryde and Cowes
- Railway Medina Tavern, 1 Sea Street, Newport, PO30 5BU — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- George Inn, 92 Upper St James Street, Newport, PO30 1LB — dogs allowed in the garden only (CAMRA’s own listing, which we’ve followed over a local source that claimed all areas).
- Solent Inn, 7 Monkton Street, Ryde, PO33 1JW — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- Pier View, 25 High Street, Cowes, PO31 7RY — CAMRA dog-friendly tag; worth confirming current trading hours before you go.
East Cowes, Sandown and Shanklin
- Prince of Wales, York Avenue, East Cowes, PO32 6JT — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- Castle Inn, 12-14 Fitzroy Street, Sandown, PO36 8HY — CAMRA dog-friendly tag. (There’s also a separate, unrelated Castle Inn in Newport — don’t confuse the two.)
- Crab Inn, 94 High Street, Shanklin, PO37 6NS — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
Ventnor, Yarmouth and Bembridge
- Mill Bay Inn, Esplanade, Ventnor, PO38 1JR — CAMRA dog-friendly tag, right on the esplanade.
- Blenheim, 9 High Street, Ventnor, PO38 1RY — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- Volunteer, 30 Victoria Street, Ventnor, PO38 1ES — CAMRA dog-friendly tag; closed Mondays.
- Bugle Hotel, The Square, Yarmouth, PO41 0NS — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- Crab & Lobster, 32 Forelands Fields Road, Bembridge, PO35 5TR — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- Birdham, 1 Steyne Road, Bembridge, PO35 5UH — CAMRA dog-friendly tag; may be known locally by a different trading name.
Freshwater, Totland and Seaview
- Red Lion, Church Place, Freshwater, PO40 9BP — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- Highdown Inn, Highdown Lane, Totland, PO39 0HY — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
- Boathouse, Springvale Road, Seaview, PO34 5AW — CAMRA dog-friendly tag.
What we excluded
We caught and excluded four pubs that carry the CAMRA dog-friendly tag but are confirmed closed: Kingston Arms (Cowes, closed long term since November 2024), Victoria Tavern (East Cowes, closed long term since May 2024), Lake Huron (Ryde, permanently closed in 2014, now housing), and Broadway Inn (Totland, permanently closed in 2015). Ryde Castle Hotel, despite being a prominent Ryde pub, carries no dog-friendly tag on CAMRA, so it’s excluded. Several private members’ clubs that turned up in search (golf clubs, working men’s clubs, social clubs) are also excluded, since they’re not genuinely public pubs regardless of their dog policy.
Cafés and restaurants: a near-total gap
Only one lead met our bar at all: a dated customer review (not the venue’s own statement) for Feed Your Head, a vegetarian café in Ventnor, explicitly mentioning dogs are welcome. We’re flagging this as weak and unconfirmed rather than a firm recommendation. Every other town — Newport, Ryde, Cowes, East Cowes, Sandown, Shanklin, Yarmouth, Bembridge, Freshwater, Totland, Seaview — came back with zero verified dog-friendly café or restaurant.
One more thing worth knowing if you’re planning a beachfront pub trip: the island runs a seasonal dog ban on several named beaches from 1 May to 30 September, so a dog-friendly beer garden on the esplanade doesn’t automatically mean the beach itself is dog-legal in summer — check our Local Dog Walks guide for the exact dates and beaches.

A busy seafront pub on a sunny afternoon is a lot of noise, new dogs and new smells. Figo settles once he’s found his spot under the table, but a calming collar or treat can take the edge off those first ten minutes if yours needs a bit of extra help. If the anxiety doesn’t ease with familiarity, that’s worth raising with your vet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a dog-friendly café or restaurant on the Isle of Wight?
Almost nothing met our bar. The one lead, Feed Your Head in Ventnor, rests on a single dated customer review rather than the venue’s own confirmed policy, so treat it as weak. Every other town we checked came back with zero verified cafés or restaurants.
Does a dog-friendly beachfront pub mean the beach is dog-friendly too?
Not necessarily. The Isle of Wight runs a seasonal dog ban on several named beaches from 1 May to 30 September, independent of any pub or café’s own dog policy.
Which Isle of Wight town has the best dog-friendly pub coverage?
Ventnor and Bembridge each have several CAMRA-confirmed dog-friendly pubs, including the esplanade-front Mill Bay Inn in Ventnor.
