Figo and I have a running joke that you can tell how a UK city feels about dogs by how fast a waiter brings the water bowl. By that measure, London does better than its reputation suggests — this is a famously busy, famously formal-looking city, but scratch the surface of any decent neighbourhood pub and there’s a good chance a dog bed’s tucked under the next table along.
This isn’t a “most places will probably say yes” guide. Every venue below is one we could verify as genuinely dog-friendly — stated on the business’s own site or social media, or reported by a named, reputable source (Time Out-style listings sites, hospitality press, or a dog-specific review platform) — not just assumed because it looks like the type. We’ve cited the source under each entry. Policies and opening times do change, especially for food-led venues where dogs are sometimes welcome in the bar but not the dining room, so it’s always worth a quick check before you set off with a hungry dog in tow.

Coverage above skews towards central, east and south-west London, because that’s where our named sources concentrate their own lists. We couldn’t find venues meeting our verification bar further out in Croydon, Bromley, Romford or Hillingdon in this research pass — if you know a genuinely dog-friendly spot out that way, we’d rather add it once we can verify it than guess.
Taking your dog to a London pub or café for the first time
- Call or check the website first, particularly for food-led venues — “dog-friendly” very often means the bar rather than the dining room, and some have an evening cut-off for dogs.
- Keep your dog on a short lead or settled under the table. A packed Soho bar or a Saturday afternoon in Clapham isn’t the place for a dog weaving between tables.
- Bring your own water bowl as backup. Most venues above provide one, but it’s not guaranteed everywhere.
- A loud, unfamiliar room is a lot to take in for some dogs, especially somewhere as busy as Shoreditch on a Friday night. If your dog gets wound up by new places and new dogs rather than settling, it’s worth taking something to help take the edge off beforehand — we like Calmdogs’ calming treats for exactly this kind of situation.
- Pick your moment. A quiet weekday lunchtime at any of the above is a much gentler introduction than a Saturday night out.
Are there dog-friendly pubs across central London, not just the suburbs?
Yes. Verified dog-friendly venues turn up right across the centre — Soho, Covent Garden, Mayfair, Marylebone and the City all have genuine options, alongside the denser clusters in areas like Greenwich, Clapham and Hackney.
Will my dog be allowed in the restaurant, or just the bar?
It varies by venue, and some only allow dogs in certain areas — Pizarro on Bermondsey Street, for example, seats dogs at the window rather than in the main restaurant. Always check with the venue directly before you go, especially for a sit-down meal.
What should I bring when taking my dog to a London pub for the first time?
A short lead, your own water bowl as backup, and realistic expectations about noise — a busy weekend venue is a lot for a dog that isn’t used to it. A quiet weekday visit is a gentler way to introduce your dog to eating out.
