CAMRA’s own “Dog Friendly” facility tags gave us a genuine handful of pubs across Newport and Caerleon, though several closed venues needed catching and excluding along the way. Cafés and restaurants are a near-total gap, with just one lead worth naming at all.
Caerleon
Red Lion, Backhall Street, Caerleon NP18 1AR — CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag. White Hart, 28 High Street, Caerleon NP18 1AE — CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag. Three previously dog-friendly-tagged Caerleon pubs are now closed for good and excluded here: the Dog House on High Street (closed long-term since 2020, seeking new tenants), the Usk Vale on Pillmawr Road in Malpas (closed since September 2024, future uncertain), and the Carvery on Ponthir Road (closed since June 2021).
Newport city centre
Cellar Door, 5 Clytha Park Road, Newport NP20 4NZ — CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag. St Julian Inn, Caerleon Road, Newport NP18 1QA — CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag, also listed on Newport City Council’s own eating-out pages as a corroborating source.
Rogerstone & Langstone
Tiny Rebel Brewery Bar, Cassington Road, Wern Industrial Estate, Rogerstone NP10 9FQ — CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag, though the listing doesn’t specify indoor versus outdoor-only access. Duffryn Arms, Duffryn Drive, Newport NP10 8TE — confirmed dog-friendly directly via the owning pub company’s own site, which describes it as a “wet-led, family and dog-friendly community pub” — the single best-sourced venue in this batch, since it’s a first-party confirmation rather than a community tag.
Cafés and restaurants: a near-total gap
Belle Vue Tea Room, Belle Vue Park, Newport — the one candidate we found anywhere in the county, with two independent sources agreeing dogs are welcomed into most of the building, with outdoor seating, water bowls and dog treats on offer. Neither source is a first-party operator site, so treat this as reasonably likely rather than fully confirmed, and check current trading status before relying on it.
Genuine gaps
We found zero verifiable dog-friendly venues of any kind — pub or café — in Bettws or Allt-yr-yn. Several other Newport city pubs came back with no dog-friendly tag either way (not confirmed non-dog-friendly, simply unconfirmed), so we’ve left them out rather than guess. No official Newport council or BID “dog-friendly venues” list exists, unlike some UK towns, which is part of why coverage here is thinner than in several other counties we’ve covered.

A new pub garden full of unfamiliar smells and other dogs can be a lot for a nervier companion. A calming bite before you set off can help them settle in rather than spend the whole visit on edge. If the anxiety runs deeper than a new environment, that’s a conversation for your vet.
