Dog-Friendly Pubs, Cafés & Restaurants in Oxfordshire

Dog resting on a table at a dog-friendly pub or café

Oxfordshire’s pub coverage via CAMRA’s own “Dog Friendly” tag is strong and spread right across the county, from Oxford city to its smallest towns. Cafés and restaurants are, as usual, much thinner, with one solid exception in Oxford itself.

Verified pubs (CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag)

Oxford city: Wolvercote, Oxford Blue, Turf Tavern, Jolly Farmers, Royal Blenheim (dog treats available), Fir Tree, among others. Banbury: Olde Reine Deer Inn, White Horse, Three Pigeons, Bell Inn. Bicester: Plough, Angel, Acorn, McCafferty’s at the White Hart. Witney: Fleece, Eagle Tavern, New Inn. Abingdon: Spread Eagle. Didcot: Royal Oak, Wheatsheaf. Henley-on-Thames: Angel on the Bridge, Three Tuns. Thame: Six Bells, Thatch. Wallingford: Royal, Dolphin (“the Dolly”). Chipping Norton: Red Lion, Bitter & Twisted (not all areas — ask on arrival). Kidlington: Black Bull, King’s Arms. Carterton: Golden Eagle (garden only), Beehive. Wantage: Royal Oak. Faringdon: Swan, Old Crown Coaching Inn.

Cafés and restaurants: one strong lead, a near-total gap elsewhere

The best find in the whole county is Megan’s by the Spires, Oxford — confirmed via the venue’s own site as dog-friendly. We found no other café or restaurant across the other thirteen towns we could independently confirm, despite a real search; this reflects genuine thinness in that category outside Oxford city rather than a research shortfall.

Closed venues excluded

Two confirmed closures were caught and excluded via CAMRA’s own live pages: the Broad Face in Abingdon, and the Abingdon Arms in Wantage (both marked closed long-term, with the latter noted as potentially never reopening). Every pub listed above was individually checked against its own CAMRA page for the Dog Friendly tag and open status, with the exact postcode confirmed against the correct Oxfordshire town — common names like Red Lion, White Horse, Royal Oak and Swan repeat elsewhere in England, so we didn’t take any of them on trust.

A busy pub on a weekend, full of new smells and other dogs, takes some settling into for a nervier dog. A calming bite before you set off can help take the edge off. If the anxiety runs deeper than a new environment, that’s a conversation for your vet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dog-friendly café in Oxfordshire?

Yes — Megan’s by the Spires in Oxford is the one we could independently confirm. Coverage is otherwise thin across the rest of the county.

Is every town in Oxfordshire covered for dog-friendly pubs?

Yes — we found at least one CAMRA-verified dog-friendly pub in all fourteen towns we checked, though smaller towns tend to have fewer options.

Is the Broad Face in Abingdon still open?

No — it’s closed long-term according to CAMRA’s own records, so we’ve left it off this list.
