Dog-friendly pub coverage in Rhondda Cynon Taf, via CAMRA’s own “Dog Friendly” tag, turned out to be concentrated in just two towns — Pontypridd and Aberdare — with most of the valleys’ smaller towns coming back as genuine gaps rather than confirmed one way or the other.
Verified pubs (CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag)
Pontypridd: Patriot, Bunch of Grapes (dogs welcome, but not in the restaurant area), Llanover Arms. Aberdare: National Tap, Whitcombe Inn.

One confirmed café
Caffi Cwtsh, at the entrance to Dare Valley Country Park, Aberdare — confirmed dog-friendly via the council’s own tourism page, with dogs directed to use the courtyard entrance rather than the front play area. We couldn’t confirm a dog-friendly café or restaurant anywhere else in the county this round.
Genuine gaps across most of the valleys
We found no CAMRA-tagged dog-friendly pub in Mountain Ash, Porth, Tonypandy, Llantrisant, Treorchy, Hirwaun, Ferndale, Llwynypia or Ynysybwl — note this means “not confirmed,” not “confirmed unfriendly,” since CAMRA’s facility tagging in this part of South Wales is patchy and several listings carry old survey dates. A pub with a beer garden in any of these towns is worth asking at the door rather than ruling out.
Closures and collisions caught and excluded
Several confirmed closures were caught via CAMRA’s own records: the Royal Hotel, Tonypandy (closed 2017, now residential); the Pencelli Hotel, Treorchy (closed 2022, since sold at auction); and a Llantrisant listing CAMRA itself marks “closed long term.” Two name collisions are worth flagging: a dog-friendly “Greyhound Inn & Hotel, Llantrisant” that turns up in search is actually in Monmouthshire, not this Llantrisant, and a dog-friendly “Butchers Arms” near Merthyr is a different pub entirely from the untagged Butchers Arms in Mountain Ash.
A busy town-centre pub, full of match-day crowds and other dogs, takes some settling into for a nervier dog. A calming bite before you set off can help take the edge off. If the anxiety runs deeper than a new environment, that’s a conversation for your vet.
