South Yorkshire’s pub coverage is genuinely strong in Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley, thinner in Rotherham, and a real zero in several of the smaller towns — plus one standout café find that’s well worth the detour.
Verified dog-friendly pubs, by town
Sheffield: Wonky Labrador, Beagle Hotel, Admiral Rodney, Dog & Partridge, and S11 Bar & Social (Friday and Saturday evenings only). Doncaster: Yorkshire Grey, and the Exchange Café & Bar (Tuesday to Saturday daytime only). Rotherham: the Riverside — outside seating only. Barnsley: Heaven & Ale, the Mount. Penistone: Cubley Hall (main entrance public bar only), Penistone Tap & Brewhouse (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Hoylandswaine: the Rose & Crown — worth confirming it’s still trading, as its lease was recently on the market. Hoyland and Hoyland Common: the Beggar & Gentleman, the Tap & Brew. Conisbrough: the Terminus, which keeps a dog treat jar on the bar.

A standout café: The Lucky Pup
The Lucky Pup at Cannon Hall Farm, Cawthorne, near Barnsley, is a dedicated 150-seat dog café — confirmed via the farm’s own site and widely covered in the press, including a visit from Princess Anne at its opening. It’s the strongest café find across the whole county; beyond it, dog-friendly café and restaurant coverage is genuinely thin to absent in every town we checked.
Closures caught and excluded
Several previously dog-friendly pubs have closed and are left out rather than risk sending you to a shut door: Department and the Sportsman Inn, both Sheffield; the Bridge Inn, Rotherham; the Rose & Crown, Penistone (now offices); the Tollbar, Maltby; the Station, Conisbrough (now an Indian restaurant); the South Yorkshire Hotel, Mexborough; and the White Hart, Thorne — which was genuinely dog-friendly before it closed, a catch worth flagging since the name and tag alone would otherwise look like a solid current listing.
Name collisions caught and excluded
A dog-friendly “White Swan” in “Dinnington” is actually near Newcastle, not Dinnington, South Yorkshire — and a second “Dinnington” pub that turns up is in Somerset. A “Three Cups Inn” tagged for “Stockbridge” is in Hampshire, not Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire — note the spelling difference that makes this an easy mix-up. Several “Pack Horse” pubs turn up for Derbyshire and Leeds, neither of which is this county.
Genuine gaps
We found no confirmed, currently-open dog-friendly pub in Stocksbridge, Chapeltown, Wombwell, Dinnington, Maltby, Mexborough or Thorne this round — each a genuine, individually-checked gap rather than a blanket guess.
A busy city-centre pub on a weekend, full of new smells and other dogs, takes some settling into for a nervier dog. A calming bite before you set off can help take the edge off. If the anxiety runs deeper than a new environment, that’s a conversation for your vet.
