If you’ve typed “dog walker near me” into Google from anywhere between Wigan and Stockport, you’ll already have noticed something: Greater Manchester is not short of people who’ll take your dog out while you’re at work. What’s harder to tell from a scroll of five-star icons is who’s actually real, who’s actually local, and who’s worth a message. We’ve done that filtering for you.
A quick word on what this page is not. A dog walker is someone who takes your dog out for a daily walk, usually solo or in a small group, usually while you’re at work or otherwise occupied. That’s different from a dog trainer, who’s teaching your dog something, and different again from a pet sitter, who typically stays overnight or boards your dog at their home. Plenty of the people below do more than one of these things — dog walking is often step one of a wider pet-care business — but we’ve only included them here because walking is a genuine, advertised part of what they do.
What we found
We searched Google directly for dog walkers across Greater Manchester’s boroughs rather than relying on a single directory site, because that’s where genuine local, independently-run walkers actually show up with verifiable ratings. The result was a lot more encouraging than some of the other local-service categories we’ve tested recently: well over 30 individually verifiable local dog walkers, each with their own Google Business listing, rating and review count, spread across at least eight of Greater Manchester’s ten boroughs — Manchester itself, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Bolton, Oldham, Wigan and Tameside. Almost all are small, sole-trader or two-or-three-person operations rather than national franchises, which tracks with what this kind of service tends to look like everywhere: it’s a local, trust-based trade, not one dominated by big chains.
Below are 16 of the most established and highest-reviewed, chosen for a mix of rating, review volume and spread across the conurbation rather than concentrated in the city centre. Ratings and review counts are Google’s, pulled directly from each listing — we haven’t inspected any of these businesses ourselves, so treat the review count as a starting point for your own checks, not a guarantee.

Ratings checked October 2026 and will drift as new reviews come in, so re-check the live score before you book. We’d also flag that a near-universal 5.0 across independent dog walkers is normal for this trade (happy clients are quick to leave a review, unhappy ones usually just stop booking), rather than a sign the figures have been polished — it’s worth reading a handful of the actual review text, not just the star count, to get a feel for how each walker works.
What to actually check before you book
Unlike boarding kennels or catteries, dog walking in the UK isn’t a licensed activity — there’s no national register or council licence you can check an individual walker against, so “licensed dog walker” on someone’s listing is marketing language, not a credential. What’s worth asking about instead:
- Public liability insurance. A professional walker should hold this as standard — ask to see it, don’t just take it on trust.
- A DBS check, especially if they’ll have a house key or let themselves in while you’re out.
- NARPS-UK membership (the National Association of Registered Pet Sitters) or similar trade body, which several of the walkers above mention and which typically requires insurance and a welfare-standards agreement to join.
- Canine first aid training — increasingly common, and genuinely reassuring if your dog has a health condition.
- Group size. A walker taking six dogs at once in Heaton Park is a different service from one doing solo walks — ask directly, and decide what your dog actually needs.
On price: rates across Greater Manchester mostly sit between £10 and £20 for a group or solo walk of 30–60 minutes, with group walks at the cheaper end and one-to-one or longer sessions towards the top. A few sources quoted services from £7, which is worth treating as an introductory or very short-visit rate rather than the norm.
Where they’re actually walking your dog
Greater Manchester’s walkers have genuine variety to work with. Heaton Park, in the north of the city, is over 600 acres on its own — plenty of room for off-lead group walks away from roads. South of the centre, Chorlton Water Park and the wider Mersey Valley give a mix of water, meadow and woodland, and several of the walkers above specifically serve that stretch (Chorlton, Didsbury, Sale). If your dog is new to a walker — or new to you, full stop — the settling-in period is usually the hardest part, not the walking itself. A nervous dog left with someone unfamiliar for the first time can get genuinely stressed before they’ve even reached the park.
