Best Local Dog Walks in Cheshire

Cheshire’s flatter than its neighbours, but that’s not the same as dull — Delamere’s ancient woodland, meres left behind by old salt workings, and a decent run of Wildlife Trust reserves in the quieter south of the county. Here are seven we could verify against an official source, spread west to east and north to south. Our Cheshire swimming spots guide covers the places built for a proper dip, if that’s more what you’re after.

Verified walks

Delamere Forest

Near Northwich and Frodsham, mid-Cheshire (Forestry England’s own page), dogs are welcome throughout, with waymarked trails including the Sandstone Trail and a large car park. It gets busy at weekends, so an early start suits dogs who don’t love crowds — and check the on-site signage, since rules can vary by area and season.

Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve, Congleton

At Davenport Lane, Brereton Heath, Congleton, CW12 4SU (Google Maps, Cheshire East Council’s page), dogs are allowed but must stay under close control at all times — no explicit lead rule stated, but we’d keep one handy around the lake and woodland.

Astbury Mere Country Park, Congleton

Near Astbury village, Congleton (Cheshire East Council’s page), dogs are welcome, with owners asked to follow the council’s linked Dog Walkers Code of Conduct. There’s a mere here, but the council frames this firmly as a walking park rather than a swimming spot.

Hare Hill, near Alderley Edge

Near Over Alderley, Cheshire East (National Trust’s own page), the walled gardens are assistance-dogs-only, but general dogs are welcome on a permissive parkland path toward Alderley Edge, Wednesday to Sunday in season. A short 2m lead is required on the path and near farmland or sheep, and recommended from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds — a £100 fine applies under a Dog Control order for mess or ignoring a landowner’s leash request.

Marbury Country Park, Northwich

Off Marbury Road, Comberbach, Northwich, CW9 6AT (Google Maps, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s page), the council’s own page doesn’t state an explicit dog policy, though third-party dog-walk sites describe it as dog-friendly. We’d keep dogs under close control around the mere and any grazing livestock until you’ve checked on arrival.

Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve, Ellesmere Port

At Thornton le Moors, Ellesmere Port, CH2 4JH (Google Maps, Cheshire Wildlife Trust’s page), dogs must be kept on a lead throughout — cattle and sheep graze the reserve, so this one’s a firm on-lead walk rather than somewhere to let your dog off.

Bickley Hall Farm, near Malpas

Near Malpas in rural south Cheshire, SY14 8EF (Google Maps, Cheshire Wildlife Trust’s page), this is the Trust’s own HQ site, with dogs on a lead throughout and a dedicated nature trail leading off the Sandstone Trail, open year-round.

Just over the boundary: worth knowing about

Dunham Massey, near Altrincham, is commonly mistaken for Cheshire — it was historically part of the county before the 1974 boundary changes, but today sits in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester. It’s worth knowing about anyway: the National Trust’s own page sets out a detailed dog policy — short lead in the deer park and gardens (gardens from 12 noon only), with a dedicated off-lead area in the North Park. See the National Trust’s page if you’re close enough to make the detour.

We looked at Wybunbury Moss and Nantwich Lake in south Cheshire too, but couldn’t confirm a public dog-walking policy for either to our usual standard, so they’re left off this list rather than guessed at. If you’re planning a longer day out, our Cheshire vets guide is worth having to hand, and a dog that’s walked properly tends to settle better at home — we like the Calmdogs probiotic chews at Calmshops as part of that routine, though it’s always worth a word with your vet first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best dog walks in Cheshire?

Delamere Forest is the best known, but Brereton Heath, Astbury Mere, Hare Hill, Marbury Country Park, Gowy Meadows and Bickley Hall Farm are all verified and spread right across the county.

Is Dunham Massey in Cheshire?

No — despite being historically Cheshire before 1974, Dunham Massey is now in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester. It’s a genuinely good dog walk, just not technically a Cheshire one.
