Best Local Dog Walks in Hampshire

Hampshire’s dog walks fall into a few very different categories — the New Forest’s free-roaming ponies and livestock bring their own specific rules, the South Downs edge near Petersfield and Winchester has its own guidance, and the Solent coast has a patchwork of council beach restrictions that genuinely don’t line up with each other. We’ve tried to keep those separate rather than flatten them into one generic rule.

New Forest National Park

  • Bolderwood Deer Watch Trail — 0.3 miles circular from Bolderwood car park, gravel, gentle slopes. No dog-specific rule beyond keeping a sensible distance from the deer sanctuary viewing platform.
  • Rhinefield Ornamental Drive/Blackwater Arboretum walk — 1 mile circular, smooth gravel with one gentle slope and a narrow gate.
  • Historic Routes trail, Fawley/Langley area — a 3-mile circular section of an 8-mile route, fairly flat with muddy patches, stiles and a footbridge.

New Forest-specific rules, confirmed from the National Park Authority’s own dog leaflet: if chased or threatened by cattle or ponies, release your dog’s lead so you and the dog can each reach safety separately — different advice from generic countryside guidance. Never let dogs chase deer (an offence under Forestry England byelaws). Keep to main tracks on heathland during ground-nesting bird season (the Authority’s own pages give slightly different ranges — one says February-August, another says curlews specifically nest March-August). Keep dogs away from ground-roosting hen harriers on heathland October-April, especially late afternoon. Pannage season (when pigs are released to eat fallen acorns) runs 14 September-29 November 2026 — though we found no official source linking a specific dog rule to pannage itself, despite that connection often being assumed.

South Downs and Petersfield

  • Cheriton walk, near Winchester — 10 miles, 4+ hours, steady climbs on a gravel/grass mix. Dogs must be under effective control, on a lead near livestock and horses.
  • River Itchen circular, from Itchen Abbas — two options, 5 miles/2.5 hours or 4 miles/2 hours, mostly level with some muddy, slippery footbridges.
  • Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Petersfield/Havant border — over 2,000 acres of woodland and downland including Butser Hill. A lead is specifically required in the Butser Hill grazing compartments; no restriction stated elsewhere in the park. Its enclosed dog field (usually £7 for half an hour, up to 3 dogs) was temporarily closed at the time of our research — worth checking current status before you go.

Solent coast

This is the part of the county where getting the exact rule right really matters, because neighbouring beaches don’t always share the same calendar.

  • Salterns Road Beach, Fareham — dogs excluded 1 May-30 September.
  • Hill Head Beach, Fareham — dogs excluded 1 October-31 March, the opposite season from Salterns Road Beach just along the same stretch of coast. Easy to get backwards, so double-check which beach and which season before you go.
  • Hayling Island, Havant — a seasonal restriction applies at the Central Beachlands bathing area, with leads required at all times in specified areas and a £100 fixed penalty for fouling; we couldn’t pin down the exact restriction dates from the published source, and Havant Council has a PSPO review consultation due to launch in late October 2026, so the rules may be about to change.
  • Gosport — a borough-wide Public Spaces Protection Order exists, but the specific beach/seafront clauses sit only in a linked document we couldn’t fully access, so we’d check locally before relying on a specific rule.
  • New Forest District coastline (Calshot, Lepe, Milford-on-Sea, Barton-on-Sea, Keyhaven) — as of the most recent information we could confirm, the district council had explicitly declined to introduce a borough-wide dog PSPO after a 2022-23 push for one, citing insufficient evidence. We couldn’t confirm whether that’s still the position in 2026, so treat “no seasonal ban” here as likely rather than certain.

Country parks

  • Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley — dogs allowed throughout (only service dogs indoors), with a dog wash on site. The official page is notably thin on lead rules or beach-specific detail, so we’re flagging that as a genuine information gap rather than assuming either way.
  • River Hamble Country Park — has its own enclosed dog walking field, a useful option if you want secure off-lead space alongside the open walking trails.
  • Lakeside Country Park, Eastleigh — 22 hectares of lakes, wet meadow and woodland, dogs allowed; no specific distance or lead rule confirmed from the official page.

Honest gap: we found very little for Basingstoke and Andover specifically — no named, sourced chalk downland walk for either town, despite Hampshire County Council managing over 3,000 miles of dog-walkable rights of way county-wide. If you’re inland around those towns, the general countryside code still applies, but we don’t have a specific named route to point you to yet.

Person walking a dog on a lead through New Forest heathland

Ponies, cattle and deer all around makes for an exciting walk, but also a lot of lead-on, lead-off moments that can wind a dog up. A calming bite before a big New Forest day can take the edge off, and a proper rest afterwards does the rest. If your dog struggles seriously around livestock or ponies, that’s a training and safety issue worth working through with a professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if New Forest ponies or cattle approach my dog?

Release your dog’s lead so you and the dog can each reach safety separately, rather than holding on — this is the New Forest National Park Authority’s own specific advice, different from general countryside guidance.

Which Hampshire beaches ban dogs in summer?

Salterns Road Beach in Fareham excludes dogs 1 May-30 September, but the neighbouring Hill Head Beach runs the opposite season (1 October-31 March) — check the specific beach rather than assuming one rule covers the whole stretch.

Is there a good dog walk near Basingstoke or Andover?

We couldn’t find a specific, sourced route for either town in this research pass — a genuine gap rather than an oversight. General countryside access rules still apply if you’re walking inland there.
