Secure, private dog fields have become really popular across the UK for dogs that need space away from other dogs, or owners who just want total peace of mind off-lead. Denbighshire, though, is a genuine gap in this market — here’s what we actually found, and why we’re only giving you one option with a fairly big caveat attached.
NCAR Play Paddock
Run by North Clwyd Animal Rescue, a registered charity (Charity Commission number 515195), at Little Pydew, Prestatyn, LL19 8BE. This isn’t a purpose-built commercial secure field business of the kind you’ll find in other counties — it’s a hire-by-the-hour paddock run by a long-established North Wales animal rescue charity, with the booking proceeds supporting their rescue work.
- Fencing and size: described only as a “secure exercise area that can accommodate dogs of all sizes” — no acreage or fence-height figure is given on the charity’s own page, so we can’t confirm those details.
- Booking: by the hour, arranged by email to playpaddock@ncar.org.uk. Owners of banned or restricted breeds, such as XL Bully, must complete an online Field Hire Agreement first. No refunds once booked.
- Price: Private play is £10 an hour for up to three dogs (plus £2 per extra dog); Group play is £17 an hour for up to six dogs (plus £2 per extra dog).

We want to be straightforward about the limits here. We couldn’t find a Google Business Profile, independent reviews, or any press coverage for this specific paddock to back up the charity’s own description. North Clwyd Animal Rescue itself is a genuine, long-standing charity, which gives us some confidence, but we’d still call this “a real option, under-verified on the reviews front” rather than a confident top recommendation.
We looked specifically at Rhyl, Denbigh, Ruthin, Llangollen, St Asaph, Rhuddlan, Corwen and the wider Clwydian Range and Dee Valley, and found nothing else — every other search returned campsites, holiday parks or dog-friendly accommodation rather than an actual secure exercise field.
If you do book the NCAR paddock, or know of another secure field in the county we’ve missed, do let us know so we can keep this page honest and up to date. In the meantime, if your dog needs a bit of extra calm before any new environment, a few of us on the team swear by the calming collars and treats from Calmshops for first visits somewhere new.
