Figo is a brilliant little cocker spaniel in every way except one: if an unfamiliar dog appears at the end of a path, especially off lead and moving fast, he gets loud and worried before I’ve even clocked what’s happening. We manage it well on home turf, but it’s taken me a long time to accept that “well managed” on a shared trail still means scanning every bend, and it still means days where he doesn’t get a proper off-lead run because the field is busy. That’s the whole case for a secure field: somewhere fully fenced, booked for us alone, where the only variable left is the weather.
So when readers in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Solihull, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall started asking where to find one, I didn’t want to hand over a vague “try Google” and call it done. I went field by field — checking each operator’s own site or a live booking platform, not just a directory blurb — to find out which ones you can actually book, what the fencing is really like, and what it costs. What follows is the honest result, including the gaps.
The pattern worth knowing first
The same thing I found researching Manchester and London holds here too: secure dog fields cluster on the rural fringe, not inside the built-up city and borough centres. Across this whole search, I could only stand behind one or two fields that genuinely sit inside the West Midlands metropolitan county boundary with a working booking route — Aldridge, on the Walsall side, is the clearest example. Everything else worth recommending is a short drive out, in the Worcestershire, Staffordshire or Warwickshire commuter belt that rings Birmingham and the Black Country. If you’re in inner Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry or Sandwell specifically, budget for a 15–30 minute drive to reach a genuinely secure, bookable field — I haven’t found a confirmed one sitting right inside those boundaries, and I’d rather tell you that than pad the list. If what you actually need is someone to manage walks day to day rather than book a field yourself, our guide to dog walkers in the West Midlands covers vetted local options instead.

A few more turned up in my search and I’ve deliberately left them out. One widely-shared “Dudley/Sandwell” result (All Things Dog Secure Fun Fields) is actually a field in Burwash, East Sussex — over 150 miles away — pulled in by a directory’s poor location tagging, not a West Midlands field at all. I also excluded a Bournville, Birmingham listing that gave a placeholder phone number and contradicted itself on price in the same breath (“free to use” and “from £12 per hour” on the same page) — that pattern of generic, unverifiable detail is a sign of templated directory filler rather than a real, checkable business. A handful of other Halesowen- and Solihull-area leads (Oscars Doggy Stay N Play, Hampton Hill Hounds, Bidford Paws Paddock, Liberty Fields Studley) had a phone number but nothing else I could verify — worth a call if you’re local, but not printed here as confirmed secure fields on the strength of a Google listing alone.
What to check before you book
- Fencing height and type. 6ft is the benchmark most operators here quote; a few run 5ft or 1.6m, which is still secure but worth knowing if you’ve got a dog who can scale or squeeze through gaps.
- Double-gated entry. Several of the fields above have an internal car park or porch gate rather than a formally advertised “double gate” — ask specifically how you get your dog from car to field without them ever being loose near the boundary.
- Size and ground. Most fields here run 1–3 acres on grass, with a couple of farms offering a second, larger woodland or paddock option.
- What’s actually booked — exclusive or shared. Every field listed is marketed as private/exclusive-use per slot, but always get that confirmed in writing when you book.
- Settle the journey before you open the boot. Figo travels better and arrives calmer when we’ve taken the edge off the car journey in advance — we use Calmdogs’ calming treats about 30 minutes before we set off.
- If the reactivity is sudden or new, a secure field is a management tool, not a fix. Speak to your vet first to rule out pain or a medical cause, and ask for a referral to a qualified, force-free behaviourist if it continues.
Are there secure dog fields inside Birmingham I can book by the hour?
Genuinely confirmed options inside the West Midlands metropolitan boundary are limited to Aldridge, on the Walsall side, plus two unconfirmed Halesowen leads. Everything else verified sits a 15–30 minute drive out, in the Worcestershire, Staffordshire or Warwickshire commuter belt.
Are secure dog fields good for reactive or anxious dogs?
They’re designed for exactly this — a privately hired, securely fenced field means no chance of an off-lead stranger’s dog approaching yours. It’s a space to practise calm, not a substitute for advice from your vet or a qualified behaviourist if the reactivity is new or sudden.
Why are so few secure dog fields inside Birmingham, Wolverhampton or Coventry themselves?
A secure field needs an acre or more of fenced farmland, which exists on the rural fringe of the conurbation and just beyond it, rather than inside the built-up city and borough centres. It’s the same structural pattern found researching Manchester and London.
