Dog Swimming in Derry and Strabane: The Foyle, the Towpath and Why We’re Not Recommending a Spot Yet

Dog walking down a dirt path between bushes

Derry and Strabane sit either side of the River Foyle, and it’s tempting to assume that means somewhere for a dog to paddle. We couldn’t find a genuine, safety-checked swimming spot to point you to, so rather than guess, here’s what we found and why we’re leaving the water out of this one.

1. The River Foyle, Derry

The Foyle runs right through the city, and Derry City & Strabane District Council has run organised open-water swimming events on it. That’s a supervised, one-off challenge, not an everyday swim spot. We found no official guidance recommending casual swimming in the river, and tidal rivers like the Foyle carry currents that aren’t always visible from the bank. We’d keep dogs out of the water here and stick to the riverside paths.

2. Strabane Towpath

A pleasant lead-walk beside the River Mourne and the old canal, with good access. We couldn’t find any source mentioning swimming here, which, given the proximity to moving water, we’d treat as a walk rather than a swim spot.

Not recommended: Creggan Country Park

Location: Killaloo, overlooking Derry city

Creggan Country Park holds a managed former reservoir used for supervised open-water swimming training, with wetsuits, marker buoys and kayak safety cover. It’s set up for people, not dogs, and runs to a schedule with controlled entry, so this isn’t somewhere to turn up with your dog for a casual splash. If you want to check current access, contact the park directly.

Busy riverside walks

The Foyle paths and Strabane Towpath both get walkers, cyclists and other dogs, so a reliable recall matters near open water. There’s a Derry and Strabane dog trainer page to help. Calmshops stocks the Calmdogs calming collar as a complementary option alongside training; it isn’t a medicine, so speak to your vet if you’re worried. Frequently Asked Questions

Can my dog swim in the River Foyle?

We wouldn’t recommend it. The Foyle is tidal with currents that aren’t always visible from the bank, and the only organised swimming we found on it was a supervised one-off council event, not an everyday activity.

Can dogs swim at Creggan Country Park?

We don’t recommend it. The lake there is a managed venue for supervised human open-water swimming training, with controlled entry and a schedule, not a casual dog swim spot.

Where’s the nearest confirmed dog swimming spot?

Belfast, a drive away, has confirmed options on its sea lough and river. See our Belfast dog swimming guide, or the UK-wide guide for other areas.
