Dog Swimming Spots in Torfaen: Lakes, Reservoirs and Where to Keep Your Dog Out of the Water

Large white and brown long-coated dog outdoors

Torfaen’s water is lakes and reservoirs, and none of them is somewhere we can point you to for a dog swim. Welsh Water urges people to stay out of reservoirs, and the council’s lake rules are about leads, not paddling. Rather than stretch the facts, here are the walks beside the water, with what each source says.

1. Garn Lakes – Blaenavon

Address: 11 Garn Rd, Blaenavon, Pontypool NP4 9SF
Google rating: 4.6 (201 reviews)
View on Google Maps

Torfaen’s dog-control order says dogs must be kept on a lead at all times while walking around the main lakes, and the Garn Lakes wetland area, a lapwing breeding area, is closed to dogs. We found no swimming rule, but with a lead rule and a nature reserve we’d treat it as a walk. Reviewers mention a free car park reached by a narrow lane.

2. Cwmbran Boating Lake

Address: Cwmbran NP44 8HT
Google rating: 4.6 (453 reviews)

The same council order says dogs must be kept on a lead at all times while walking around the lake, which includes the cafe and play areas. We found no official swimming rule. It’s a busy family spot, so a lead and a bag are the order of the day.

3. Pant-yr-eos Reservoir

Address: Pant-yr-eos Reservoir NP44 7AS
Google rating: 4.4 (11 reviews)
View on Google Maps

Welsh Water’s guidance is that it is urging people of all ages to stay out of the water at reservoirs. The page doesn’t name this reservoir or mention dogs, but a reservoir is a reservoir, so we’d keep dogs on the bank.

4. Llandegfedd Reservoir

On the Torfaen and Monmouthshire border. Welsh Water has warned against unauthorised swimming in its reservoirs, and only organised open-water swimming is offered through the on-site watersports centre. Torfaen’s page says parking is for anglers and watersports participants only, and the cafe is open all year. Dog rules we couldn’t confirm, so check at the site.

Busy lakes, nervous dogs

New places with water, anglers and other dogs can be a lot. Calmshops stocks the Calmdogs calming collar, a complementary option alongside training that isn’t a medicine; speak to your vet if you’re worried. A Torfaen dog trainer can help. Local vets are under best vets in Torfaen, and the rest is on dog services in Torfaen.

Yes. Torfaen’s dog-control order says dogs must be kept on a lead at all times while walking around the main lakes at Garn Lakes and around Cwmbran Boating Lake. The Garn Lakes wetland area, a lapwing breeding area, is closed to dogs.
