Rhondda Cynon Taf is valley country: country parks, river walks and some of the waterfalls that make the area around Waterfall Country famous. What it doesn’t have, as far as we could verify, is an official place for a dog to swim. We found no council statement allowing or banning swimming at any of the sites below, so this page tells you what is confirmed and leaves the rest alone.
1. Dare Valley Country Park – Aberdare
Address: Grecynon, Aberdare CF44 7RG
Google rating: 4.7 (1,725 reviews)

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council says dogs are welcome but not in the play areas, and that free parking is available for cars, motorhomes and buses. The council’s page doesn’t mention swimming in the park’s lakes. With two lakes on site, keep your dog under close control around the water and follow any signs. Reviewers praise the visitor centre cafe.
2. Ynysangharad War Memorial Park – Pontypridd
Address: 8 Ceridwen Terrace, Pontypridd CF37 4PD
Google rating: 4.7 (2,752 reviews)

A town park beside the River Taff. We found no official dog or swimming guidance for it, and the council’s dog-control summary covers play areas, cemeteries, school grounds and pitches. Reviewers mention lead rules near the cafe and play area, so read the signs. We’d call this a walk.
3. Waterfall Country
Natural Resources Wales says the Waterfall Country woodlands straddle the borders of Powys, Neath Port Talbot and Rhondda Cynon Taf. It warns that serious accidents do happen and there have been several fatalities in recent years. The Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority says rivers may look appealing but entering the water needs the greatest care, and that low river temperatures pose a risk of cold water shock. We wouldn’t plan a dog swim here; see our Neath Port Talbot guide for the walking side.
For a swim, go to the coast
The nearest beaches are covered in our Vale of Glamorgan and Swansea guides, with the UK dog swimming guide for further afield.
Long valley walks
A hilly valley walk is a good day for most dogs. If you’re looking at everyday extras, Calmshops has a dog vitamins and supplements collection; ask your vet what suits your dog. A Rhondda Cynon Taf dog trainer can help with lead work, and local vets are listed under best vets in Rhondda Cynon Taf. More at dog services in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
