At Dinefwr Park, beside Llandeilo, the National Trust asks for dogs to be on a lead at all times in the parkland, because livestock graze there. Only assistance dogs may enter the Deer Park or use the boardwalk. It’s a good place to practise being relaxed on a lead among lots of interesting smells. Carmarthenshire

Silent Valley is a nature reserve in Blaenau Gwent run by Gwent Wildlife Trust, and it’s open at all times with free entry and a car park at the entrance. It makes a good contrast to the busier parts of the valleys. Blaenau Gwent’s AboutDogs coverage is lean: a local dog trainers directory, a local

Merthyr Mawr Warren, near Bridgend, has sand dunes described as the highest in Wales. It was an administrative county for a very long time, until 1965, when it was absorbed into Greater London. The name hasn’t gone anywhere in people’s heads, or in search boxes. If you’re in Harrow,

Peregrine falcons first bred at Malham Cove in 1993, the first time in recorded history, and a 2018 Yorkshire Post report said they had nested there every year since. In past seasons the RSPB and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority have run a free viewpoint with telescopes, so visitors can watch the birds without

The tea-room at Carding Mill Valley is dog-friendly, with water bowls at the front and inside, which is a good way to end a walk on the Long Mynd. The National Trust asks owners to keep dogs under close control, ideally on a lead, and to carry a lead for livestock or wildlife. The seasons
