Gower, most of which lies in the City and County of Swansea, was designated in 1956 as the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK. Not a bad thing to have at the end of the road when all you want is a decent dog walk.
Swansea is among our best-covered Welsh areas: a local trainers directory plus Swansea guides for sitters, groomers and rescue. Vets and swimming don’t have Swansea pages yet, so those two lines go to UK-wide guides. Start with the list, then follow the links for the detail.

Rhossili Down on Gower
Rhossili Down rises to The Beacon, at 193 metres the highest point on Gower, with the Neolithic Sweyne Howes tomb on the Down. It’s exposed, so bring water for your dog and expect wind. Gower’s interior includes farmland and common land, so you may meet grazing animals. Keep a lead to hand and follow any signs.
Light for short days
Open hillsides and the bay get dark early in winter. A light-up LED dog collar from Calmshops makes your dog easier to spot on the bay and hillsides in winter. It doesn’t replace staying close.
