Essex runs from the edge of Epping Forest to the Blackwater estuary and the seafront at Southend, so where you’re staying with a dog really depends on which bit of the county you’re heading to. We went looking for genuinely dog-friendly places to stay — checked against the hotel’s own website or official chain page, not just an aggregator listing — and we’re telling you honestly where the gaps are too.

Chain hotels
Four IHG hotels in Essex confirm a pet policy on their own website:
- Holiday Inn Southend (A127): pets welcome, £30 a night pet charge, up to two pets per room.
- Holiday Inn Colchester: dogs only (no other pets), £15 a night plus a £50 per-stay deposit.
- Holiday Inn Express Colchester: one pet allowed, £15 a night, no weight limit stated.
- Holiday Inn Express Braintree: up to two pets, £10 a night, dogs only.
Holiday Inn Basildon, Holiday Inn London Brentwood (M25 Jct.28) and Holiday Inn Express Harlow all explicitly rule out pets (assistance dogs aside) on their own pages, so we’ve left them off this list rather than guess. As with everywhere else in the country, Premier Inn’s general policy doesn’t allow dogs, so none of its Essex branches are listed here either. We also couldn’t find a single Accor-brand hotel — ibis, Mercure or Novotel — actually operating in Essex, which looks like a genuine gap in the county’s hotel market rather than an oversight on our part.
Independent hotels and B&Bs
32 The Hythe, a B&B on the water in Maldon, lists “pets welcome” and “owner has pets” among its amenities. There’s a promising lead for Southend too: The Palace Hotel on Western Esplanade (formerly Park Inn by Radisson Palace) appears on an IHG-affiliated independent collection page with a quoted £20-a-dog-a-night policy, but the hotel has changed hands recently and we couldn’t confirm that policy on the hotel’s own current website in time for this guide — worth a quick call to the hotel (01702 455100) before you book on the strength of it.
Camping and holiday parks
- Mersea Island Holiday Park, East Mersea — dogs allowed in all accommodation grades, including the Exclusive range, capped at two dogs per booking.
- Gatehouse Barns (Camping and Caravanning Club site), near Colchester — pets welcome, with a designated dog walk on site.
Where we couldn’t find anything to recommend yet
We came up empty for Chelmsford, Basildon, Harlow, Brentwood and Saffron Walden — the chain hotels we could check in those towns either don’t allow pets or simply aren’t there. The Tendring coast (Clacton, Frinton, Walton-on-the-Naze) has several caravan parks that look promising from search results, but none of them had a pet policy we could confirm directly on an official operator site, so we’ve left them out rather than pass on secondhand information. If you know of somewhere in these areas that should be here, let us know.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are any Essex hotels genuinely dog-friendly?
Yes. Four IHG-brand hotels — Holiday Inn Southend, Holiday Inn Colchester, Holiday Inn Express Colchester and Holiday Inn Express Braintree — confirm pet policies on their own sites, plus an independent B&B in Maldon.
Can I bring my dog to Premier Inn in Essex?
No. Premier Inn’s general UK policy doesn’t allow dogs, and that applies to its Essex branches too.
Which Essex towns have no dog-friendly accommodation you could verify?
Chelmsford, Basildon, Harlow, Brentwood, Saffron Walden and the Tendring coast (Clacton, Frinton, Walton) came back empty in our research — we’ll update this page if that changes.
