Essex has a proper spread of dog-friendly pubs once you go county-wide — CAMRA’s own WhatPub listings, checked on 18 October 2026, are our main source here, backed up by a couple of official council and tourism pages. We’ve noted where a pub only allows dogs in part of the building, because “dog friendly” on a listing doesn’t always mean the whole pub.

Chelmsford
- Golden Fleece, 84 Duke Street, CM1 1JP — “now a dog friendly pub.”
- Rising Sun, 232 New London Road, CM2 9AE — family and dog friendly.
- Black Bull, 244 Rainsford Road, CM1 2PN — dogs welcome, with a dedicated dog station in the beer garden.
Colchester
- The Odd One Out (micropub), 28 Mersea Road, CO2 7ET — dog friendly.
- Dog & Pheasant, 24 Nayland Road, Mile End, CO4 5EG — dog friendly.
- Dog & Pheasant, East Mersea Road, East Mersea, CO5 8TP — same pub group, a second site on Mersea Island, dog friendly.
Southend-on-Sea
The Alex, 53 Alexandra Street, SS1 1BW, is listed as dog friendly by the official Visit Southend tourism site.
Harlow
- Green Man Hotel, 2 Mulberry Green, Old Harlow, CM17 0ET.
- Spit ‘n’ Feathers, 36 High Street, CM17 0DW.
Brentwood
Robin, Ongar Road/Warescot Road, CM15 9EB — dog friendly.
Braintree
- Eagle, 192 Coggeshall Road, CM7 9ER.
- Horse & Groom, 20 Rayne Road, CM7 2QA — dogs allowed, but not in the carpeted bar; they’re welcome in the wooden-floor bar.
Saffron Walden
The Railway Arms, Station Road, CB11 3HQ — the town’s own tourism site says dogs are “most welcome,” guide and hearing dogs included.
Maldon district
- Salero Lounge, 43–45 High Street, Maldon, CM9 5PF — dog friendly.
- Parlour Café, Creeksea Place Farm, Burnham-on-Crouch, CM0 8PJ — large dog-friendly garden plus a separate dog-friendly café area.
- Mrs Salisbury, 2 The Street, Wickham Bishops, CM8 3NN — front patio seating for dog owners (lower confidence; this is patio-only, not a blanket dog-friendly claim).
Tendring coast
The Victory, Suffolk Street, Walton-on-the-Naze, CO14 8AR — dog friendly, but not in the restaurant area.
Just over the border: Stansted Mountfitchet
Dog & Duck, 58 Lower Street, CM24 8LR — has a traditional dog-friendly public bar with level access and a wide door; the separate quiet lounge bar’s dog policy isn’t stated.
Where we came up short
We found no dog-friendly venue we could verify in Basildon town, or in Clacton-on-Sea and Frinton-on-Sea specifically — a few candidates came up in searches but none carried a confirmed dog-friendly tag or statement on checking. We also couldn’t find a single confirmed dog-friendly café or restaurant (as opposed to a pub) anywhere in the county through this research pass — if you run one and we’ve missed you, get in touch.
Taking a nervous dog to a busy beer garden? A few Calmdogs calming bites alongside a familiar blanket can take the edge off a new place.
