North Yorkshire pulls in a huge number of dog-owning visitors every year, but first-party confirmed dog-friendly accommodation turned out thinner than you’d expect for a county this size — several of the biggest draws, including York itself and Scarborough, came back with no confirmable listing at all. What we did verify is solid, spread across price points from hostel to country-house hotel.

The Stables, Whitby (Inn Collection Group) — up to 2 dogs, £15/night when booking direct; most rooms are pet-friendly, with a limited number kept pet-free, so specify at booking. The Harrogate Inn (also Inn Collection Group) — up to 2 dogs, £15/night direct-booking rate, “a select number” of pet-friendly rooms, confirm at booking. The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa and The Fell Hotel, Bolton Abbey Estate near Skipton — £20 per dog per night at the hotels, £40 per dog for estate cottage stays up to 10 nights, with an optional £35/night four-poster dog bed; no stated numeric dog limit. Swinton Park Hotel, Swinton Cottages and Swinton Bivouac, near Masham/Ripon — hotel and cottages £35/dog, the Bivouac’s Tree Lodge/Meadow Yurt/Loft £10/dog/night (max 2 dogs there specifically); dogs are excluded from the main restaurant but welcome in the Terrace Bar and garden.
YHA hostels — a network-wide policy, with one notable exclusion
The Youth Hostel Association’s own published dogs policy allows dogs at most sites booked as Camping & Cabins (£10/dog/night, max 2 dogs), or Exclusive Hire (£50/dog/stay, max 4 dogs) — except YHA Malham, in the Yorkshire Dales, which is explicitly excluded from Exclusive Hire dog bookings. Dogs are never allowed on beds or furniture or in standard dorm bedrooms. The general policy doesn’t name every individual hostel, so treat YHA Whitby, YHA Scarborough and YHA York specifically as needing a direct check before assuming dog-friendly status.

Needs a direct check
Several well-known names turn up repeatedly on third-party “best dog-friendly” lists without a confirmable first-party policy: Middlethorpe Hall & Spa, York; Crown Spa Hotel and The Grand Hotel, Scarborough; Kings Head Hotel, Richmond (we couldn’t even confirm this one is still trading under this name); and Wood Nook Caravan Park, Masons Campsite (both Yorkshire Dales, near Skipton) and Flower of May Holiday Park, near Scarborough. A direct call to each is the only reliable way to confirm terms right now.
Genuine gaps
Despite real effort, we found no first-party confirmed dog-friendly accommodation for York city centre, Scarborough town, Richmond, or the town centres of Skipton, Settle, Thirsk, Ripon, Northallerton, Malton or Pickering — genuine gaps for a tourist-heavy county, not a research shortfall. Premier Inn branches exist across North Yorkshire but are excluded throughout, as UK branches are assistance-dogs-only as standard.
A long day exploring the Dales or the Moors, followed by a room full of new smells, can take some settling into. A calming bite before you travel can help your dog settle in for that first night somewhere new. If the unsettled behaviour doesn’t ease once they’ve had a chance to adjust, that’s worth a word with your vet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there dog-friendly accommodation in York itself?
We couldn’t confirm a first-party dog policy for any York city-centre hotel in this pass — a genuine gap despite York being a major draw. Middlethorpe Hall & Spa is worth a direct call.
Does YHA allow dogs in North Yorkshire?
Generally yes, under YHA’s network-wide dogs policy — except YHA Malham, which is excluded from Exclusive Hire dog bookings specifically.
Is Premier Inn dog-friendly in North Yorkshire?
Not as standard. UK Premier Inns remain assistance-dogs-only, so we haven’t listed any North Yorkshire branch as dog-friendly.
