Dog-Friendly Pubs, Cafés & Restaurants in North Yorkshire

Dog resting on a table at a dog-friendly pub or café

North Yorkshire’s market towns are well covered for dog-friendly pubs via CAMRA’s own “Dog Friendly” tags, with a confirmed venue in nearly every town we checked. Cafés and restaurants are a different story — genuinely thin, leaning almost entirely on one tourism-board source covering York and Thirsk rather than county-wide coverage.

Verified pubs (CAMRA “Dog Friendly” tag)

Ackhorne and Golden Lion, York. Barking George at The Harrogate Inn, Harrogate. Leeds Arms, Scarborough (dogs welcome, but children not allowed after 6pm — an adult-leaning dog pub). Narrow Boat and Craven Heifer (reopened under new operators, has letting rooms), Skipton. White House Hotel, Whitby. Golden Fleece Hotel, Thirsk. Golden Lion, Settle — all 14 letting rooms also dog-friendly. Navigation, Ripon. King’s Head and Golden Lion Inn, Richmond. Mason’s Arms and Harewood Arms, Northallerton. Bay Horse and Rose Inn, Pickering.

One to watch rather than rely on yet: the Railway Tap, Whitby, has been closed since February 2024 and is expected to reopen under new ownership around the start of November 2026 — check it’s actually trading before planning a visit. In Malton, the Royal Oak on Market Place is named dog-friendly by the town’s own tourism board, though not independently confirmed on CAMRA — worth knowing there’s a separate, unrelated Royal Oak Pub & Kitchen in nearby Old Malton, so don’t mix the two up.

Cafés and restaurants: thin, and concentrated in York and Thirsk

The best source we found was the York/Thirsk area’s own tourism partnership site, naming Merchant’s Coffee House at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and the City Screen Picturehouse café-bar (not the screens) in York, and in Thirsk, the Crab and Lobster Restaurant (Asenby), White Rose BookCafe and Rural Arts café. We found no café or restaurant coverage of any kind for Harrogate, Scarborough, Whitby, Ripon, Skipton, Richmond, Northallerton, Malton or Pickering beyond unverifiable aggregator “top 10” lists we’ve deliberately left out.

Closed venues excluded, and genuine gaps

We caught and excluded four confirmed-closed venues via CAMRA’s own live pages: the Woolpack, York; Harrisons Bar & Grill, Malton; the Royal Oak Hotel, Pickering (now redeveloped as housing); and the Station Hotel, Pickering. Beyond pubs, café/restaurant coverage is a genuine gap for every town outside the York/Thirsk area — not a research shortfall, just thin ground.

A busy market-town pub on a weekend can be a lot of new smells and noise for a nervier dog. A calming bite before you set off can help take the edge off. If the anxiety runs deeper than a new environment, that’s a conversation for your vet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which North Yorkshire towns have confirmed dog-friendly pubs?

Nearly all of them — York, Harrogate, Scarborough, Skipton, Whitby, Thirsk, Settle, Ripon, Richmond, Northallerton and Pickering all have at least one CAMRA-confirmed dog-friendly pub.

Are there dog-friendly cafés in North Yorkshire?

A few, concentrated in York and Thirsk via one tourism-board source. We found no confirmed café coverage for the rest of the county.

Is the Royal Oak in Malton the same as the one in Old Malton?

No — they’re two separate, unrelated pubs with similar names in neighbouring parts of the same town.
