“Dog-friendly” can mean anything from a whole pub to one table on a patio, so we only wanted venues where we could pin down exactly what’s allowed. Our County Durham hub page covers the rest of the county, and if you’re looking for somewhere to stay, our accommodation guide is here too. Here’s what we could confirm, venue by venue.
Pubs
The Butchers Arms, Chester-le-Street
At Middle Chare, DH3 3QD (Google Maps, listing with venue reviews), dogs are welcome inside, not just the garden — reviews describe it as somewhere dogs are genuinely “always welcome and spoilt.”
The Kingslodge Inn, Durham
At Waddington Street, Flass Vale, DH1 4BG (Google Maps, operator’s own site), dogs are welcome in designated areas of both the pub and the restaurant.
The Seaton Lane Inn, Seaham
At SR7 0LP (Google Maps, operator’s own site), designated dog-friendly pub and restaurant areas are confirmed, with water bowls and treats provided.
The Royal George Tavern, Shildon
At 11-13 Main Street, DL4 1AJ (Google Maps, listing), water bowls, dog beds and treats are confirmed, with “regular canine visitors.” Which specific areas dogs are allowed in isn’t stated on the listing, so it’s worth checking on arrival.
The Rose and Crown, Romaldkirk
Near Barnard Castle, DL12 9EB (Google Maps, tourism board listing), dogs are welcome in the bar area, on a lead. The Oak Panelled Restaurant and front terrace aren’t confirmed as dog-friendly, so stick to the bar if you’re not sure.
Just over the boundary in Darlington, The Spotted Dog on The Green welcomes dogs into its carpeted bar area — flagging it here since it’s commonly used by Durham-area visitors, even though Darlington borough sits outside the ceremonial county.
Cafés
Stables Café, Raby Castle, Staindrop
Near Barnard Castle, DL2 3AH area (Google Maps, tourism board toolkit), dogs are allowed in the café itself, not just the grounds. Raby Castle also has a covered Coach Yard for muddy dogs, and leaded dogs are welcome in the Walled Garden and across 200 acres of parkland — the castle building itself is assistance-dogs-only.
Fifteas Vintage Tea Room, Bishop Auckland
At 9 Market Place, DL14 7NJ (Google Maps, venue listing), leashed dogs are welcome at the outdoor patio tables. We couldn’t confirm dogs are allowed inside, so plan on the patio.
Doggie Diner, Durham
At 40 Canterbury Road, DH1 5PY (Google Maps, venue listing), the venue doesn’t state a policy outright, but customer reviews describe dogs — including a puppy being socialised — visiting regularly. Worth a quick call before you go if you want certainty.
What we couldn’t confirm
Barnard Castle town centre itself is a genuine gap — we couldn’t directly verify a pub or café in the town, only nearby villages. The Old Well Inn is the strongest unconfirmed candidate there, but its own site blocked our check, so it’s worth a phone call or a look at recent reviews before you go. Gilroy’s, also in Barnard Castle, turns up on a tourism board list but with no policy detail we could confirm.
Stanhope and Weardale are an honest coverage gap too — every search either misidentified a venue outside the area or turned up attractions rather than food and drink, so we’re not naming anything there rather than guess.
Once you’ve found somewhere to eat, our County Durham vets guide is worth bookmarking, and we’ve found the calming collars and treats at Calmshops useful for busier venues — always check with your vet first if your dog has any underlying health conditions. Our local dog walks guide is a good next stop too.
