Visit Monmouthshire’s own tourism board tally gave us the bulk of this batch’s pubs, though it only confirms a venue is dog-friendly rather than whether that means indoors or garden-only — worth bearing in mind throughout. Tintern came out as the best-covered town by a clear margin, with several independent sources agreeing.
Tintern
The Wild Hare, Tintern — has its own operator website and is the strongest-sourced pub in this town. The Anchor Inn, 2 Saint Mary Street, Tintern NP16 6TE; The Wye Valley Hotel Restaurant, Main Road, Tintern NP16 6SQ; The Royal George, Main Road, Tintern NP16 6SF; and The Rose & Crown, Main Road, Tintern NP16 6SE — all confirmed dog-friendly via Visit Monmouthshire, with the Rose & Crown also carrying its own CAMRA page. Visit Wales’s own dog-friendly Tintern feature states plainly that “the whole of Tyndyrn/Tintern is dog-friendly,” though it doesn’t break individual venues down by indoor-vs-garden access.
Abergavenny
The Clytha Arms, Clytha, Abergavenny NP7 9BW — confirmed currently trading via CAMRA and dog-friendly via Visit Monmouthshire. Foxhunter Inn, Nantyderry NP7 9DN; Goose & Cuckoo Inn, Upper Llanover NP7 9ER; The Hunters Moon Inn, Llangattock Lingoed NP7 8RR; The Crown at Pantygelli, Old Hereford Road NP7 7HR; and The Halfway, Tal-y-coed NP7 8TL — all Visit Monmouthshire dog-friendly listings. The Skirrid Mountain Inn (famous as “the most haunted pub in Wales”) is confirmed open and trading, but we couldn’t verify a specific dog policy for it, so it’s named here without a dog-friendly claim.
Usk
The Castle Inn, 7 Twyn Square, Usk NP15 1BH — confirmed via two Visit Monmouthshire pages. The Greyhound Inn & Hotel — genuinely dog-friendly per its own branding and site. The Black Bear Inn, Bettws Newydd — listed under “Usk Valley” rather than Usk town itself, a geographic looseness worth noting if you’re searching specifically in town.
Chepstow & Caldicot
The Boat Inn, The Back, Chepstow NP16 5HH — confirmed dog-friendly via two independent sources. The Five Alls Inn, Hocker Hill Street, Chepstow NP16 5ER, and The Village Inn, Beachley Road, Sedbury NP16 7AA, are both named by Visit Monmouthshire. In Caldicot, the Castle Inn, 64 Church Road NP26 4HW, and the Cross Inn, 1 Newport Road NP26 4BG, are both confirmed currently trading via CAMRA, though neither has an explicit published dog policy we could verify.
Monmouth & Raglan
The King’s Head Hotel (Wetherspoons), 8 Agincourt Square, Monmouth NP25 3DY, and The Pig and Apple, Upper Meend Farm, Monmouth NP25 4RP — both Visit Monmouthshire listings. In Raglan, the 19th Bar & Lounge at Raglan Golf Club is the only confirmed dog-friendly venue; the Beaufort Coaching Inn & Brasserie appears in general listings with no dog confirmation found.
Caught and excluded
The Northgate Inn, Caerwent, is confirmed permanently closed and converted to housing — excluded despite still surfacing in general search results. A pub called “Tippling Philosopher” that ranks for Caldicot searches is genuinely in Milborne Port, Somerset — not the same venue, and excluded.
Cafés and restaurants, and genuine gaps
Café coverage is thin and mostly single-sourced: The Filling Station Café in Tintern and The Retreat Llanover Café near Abergavenny are the best-confirmed, both via Visit Monmouthshire. Several more leads (cafés in Chepstow and Monmouth) came from one third-party aggregator only and aren’t independently confirmed, so we’ve left them out. Caerwent, Trellech, Mitchel Troy, Llanfoist, Gilwern, St Arvans, Shirenewton and Llantilio Crossenny all came back with no verifiable pub or café at all — a genuine gap across most of the county’s smaller villages.

A busy pub garden full of new smells and other dogs can be a lot for a nervier companion. A calming bite before you set off can help them settle in rather than spend the whole visit on edge. If the anxiety runs deeper than a new environment, that’s a conversation for your vet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Monmouthshire town has the most dog-friendly pubs?
Tintern, by a clear margin — Visit Wales’s own feature says the whole village is dog-friendly, and several individual pubs have independent confirmation on top of that.
Is the Northgate Inn in Caerwent still open?
No — it’s permanently closed and converted to housing, despite still appearing in some search results as if it’s trading.
Are there dog-friendly cafés in Monmouthshire?
A couple, mainly in Tintern and near Abergavenny, but coverage is thin across the rest of the county.
