The coast here moves. The Holderness shoreline between Bridlington and Withernsea is often described as among the fastest-eroding in Europe, so the beach you walked last year may not be quite where you remember it. Inland, the East Riding is a different world of chalk wolds, flat farmland and long skies, with footpaths that often cross working fields.
Trainers have an East Riding page. Our vets and swimming guides cover the whole of Yorkshire rather than this area alone, and Hull has its own sitters, groomers and pet transport pages. Rescue falls back to the UK-wide guide. We’ve tried to be plain about each, rather than imply local coverage we don’t have.

Crumbling cliffs and open beaches
Keep well back from cliff edges on the Holderness coast, and don’t let your dog go near the base of the cliffs either, as the clay is soft and falls can happen without much warning. Stick to the beach and the marked paths, and check the tide before you go.
Some East Riding beaches have seasonal dog restrictions over the summer, and the details vary by beach, so check the signs or the council’s website. Inland on the Wolds, farmland footpaths often cross fields with livestock or crops, so follow the signs and keep your dog on a lead where asked.
Short days on the coast
Exposed coast and open farmland mean early darkness in winter, and a dark dog on a big beach is a worry. A USB-rechargeable LED dog collar from Calmshops makes your dog easier to spot, though it’s no substitute for keeping them close.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a vets guide just for the East Riding?
No. Our best vets in Yorkshire guide covers the whole of Yorkshire, and our swimming guide works the same way.
What does AboutDogs have for Hull?
Hull has its own dog sitters, dog groomers and pet transport pages, all linked above.
Is it safe to walk my dog near the Holderness cliffs?
Keep your dog away from the cliff edge and the base of the cliffs, because the coast erodes quickly. Stay on the beach and marked paths, and follow local signs.
