Dog-Friendly Accommodation in West Sussex: Hotels, Lodges & Camping

Dog indoors in a bright, dog-friendly room

West Sussex has some lovely dog-friendly stays, especially around Chichester, the Downs and the coast, and several publish their dog fees. Prices change, so treat the figures below as what each operator’s page said when we checked. Coverage is patchier east of the county and in the coastal towns, and we’ve been clear about what we couldn’t confirm.

Hotels and estates that state their policy

The Goodwood Hotel, Westhampnett, Chichester PO18 0QB (01243 775537), charges £30 per dog per stay, not per night. It has 12 dog-friendly ground-floor rooms, allocated first come first served, and dogs must be a year old or over. Dogs aren’t allowed in the health club, treatment rooms or function rooms, leads are required on the estate, and dog rates don’t apply during headline events or Christmas and New Year packages. Goodwood’s self-catering cottages charge £30 per dog for up to two dogs over a year old, with a bed and bowl provided.

Dog relaxing on a bed in dog-friendly accommodation

The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa in Midhurst charges £25 per dog per night, with up to two dogs per room. Dogs are welcome in the conservatory and bar but not the spa or restaurant. Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa at Climping, from the same group, charges £30 per dog per night, also for up to two dogs per room. Both pages recommend booking a higher room category, and we couldn’t confirm either hotel’s full postcode from the operator’s pages.

Camping, lodges and chains

Seal Bay Resort, Warners Lane, Selsey PO20 9EL (01243 604499), welcomes dogs on camping and touring pitches at £2 per night per dog, on a lead and not left unattended. Dogs are allowed in selected caravan grades only, for an extra cost it doesn’t state. Tinwood Estate Vineyard Lodges at Halnaker are described by Visit Arundel as having a dog-friendly tasting room and eight dog-friendly lodges, but that is a destination listing rather than the estate’s own page, so confirm fees and limits. Travelodge says pets are welcome in standard rooms and SuperRooms with a per-pet cleaning charge, but we couldn’t confirm which West Sussex hotels take them, so check each one when you book.

Who says no

Premier Inn says that apart from trained assistance dogs it doesn’t allow pets, which covers its West Sussex hotels at Gatwick, Crawley, Horsham and Chichester. Butlin’s Bognor Regis accepts only assistance animals.

Leads to ring first

These come from guides and listings rather than the operator, so please confirm. Sawdays says The Black Horse at Amberley allows dogs in three ground-floor rooms and Room 1 at £30 per stay. The Great Sussex Way lists dog-friendly rooms at The Angel Inn in Petworth, The Swan Inn in Midhurst, Crouchers Hotel at Birdham, Millstream Hotel at Bosham and the Royal Oak Inn at Lavant (there are many Royal Oaks, so match the address). The Crab & Lobster at Sidlesham welcomes dogs in some public rooms, with the bedroom policy unknown. West Sands Holiday Park in Selsey has contradictory dog information on a booking site, so ask the park directly.

We found no operator-verified dog-friendly stays in Worthing, Shoreham, Bognor Regis, Horsham, Crawley, Burgess Hill or Haywards Heath beyond the chains, and we didn’t check Holiday Inn, Hilton, Best Western, Haven or Warner. That is a limit of what we could verify, not proof there are none.

A new room and a long drive can unsettle a nervier dog. A calming bite before you travel can help take the edge off the first night away, and if your dog is regularly anxious away from home, speak to your vet.
