Best Local Dog Walks in Belfast

Belfast has more going for dog walks than I expected before Figo and I started digging in — a hill with a view that’s said to have inspired Gulliver’s Travels, a brand-new dog park in the city’s oldest park, and a free fenced field just out towards Dundonald that nobody seems to talk about. If your dog loves a splash rather than just a sniff, our guide to dog swimming spots in Belfast covers the sea lough and beach separately.

I’ve kept to the same rule we use everywhere: if I couldn’t find the current, official word on a spot’s dog rules — the council’s own page, or the landowner’s own page — I’ve left it out rather than guess, even where it’s clearly a popular local walk.

Dog walks in and around Belfast

  • Ormeau Park, Ormeau Road, Belfast — the city’s oldest municipal park, and home to a new dedicated dog park with agility equipment and play features where dogs can be off the lead, alongside surrounding parkland for a more relaxed walk. • Cave Hill Country Park, Belfast — woodland trails climb the hillside to Napoleon’s Nose, with views across the city and Belfast Lough. Run by Belfast City Council, so the citywide lead and control rules below apply throughout. Source: Belfast City Council.
  • Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park, Upper Malone Road, south Belfast — open lawns, woodland trails and riverside paths, with the famous rose gardens closed to dogs in summer but the wider park open year-round under the same council rules.
  • Billy Neill Playing Fields, Dundonald — Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s first dedicated, fenced dog exercise area, free to use, where dogs can be off the lead inside the fenced zone. Source: Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s own news page.
  • Stormont Estate, Upper Newtownards Road, Belfast — miles of trails through woodland and across open lawns around the Parliament Buildings, genuinely popular with local dog walkers according to the Assembly’s own visitor information, though dogs should be kept under control and on a lead in the more formal grounds.
  • Rowallane Garden (National Trust), Saintfield, roughly 14 miles south of Belfast — just over the city boundary, but worth the drive for a dog who needs proper off-lead space: there’s a dedicated, gated dog exercise field near the welcome area, with a short lead required elsewhere in the garden and woodland, and dogs excluded from the working farmland. Belfast’s citywide rules, in plain terms

Belfast City Council’s own page sets out the same baseline rules across every park and open space it manages, under the Dogs (Specified Maximum) (Belfast) Order 2012:

  • Keep your dog on a lead in public places, including parks, except inside a dedicated off-lead dog park area.
  • You’re not allowed to have more than four dogs under your control at any one time.
  • Pick up and bin your dog’s mess — failing to do so can mean an £80 fixed penalty notice.
  • A dog wearing a yellow ribbon or bandana on its lead is signalling it needs space — give it room and don’t let your dog approach.

Before you go off-lead anywhere on this list

  • Off-lead space in Belfast’s own parks is limited to dedicated dog park areas like Ormeau Park’s — everywhere else on council land, the lead stays on.
  • Billy Neill’s fenced field and Rowallane’s dog exercise field are the two genuinely secure, off-lead spots on this list — useful if your dog needs space from other dogs rather than just a lead-free stretch.
  • If you’re heading somewhere new and your dog tends to get unsettled by unfamiliar places, crowds or other dogs, it’s worth popping a calming treat in your pocket for the car journey or the first few minutes off the lead — we always have a packet of Calmdogs’ calming treats handy for exactly this with Figo.
  • If your dog has a health condition that affects how far or how fast they should walk, have a chat with your vet about what’s sensible before you tackle somewhere new — our round-up of the best vets in Belfast is a good place to start if you don’t already have one.
