Secure Dog Fields in Belfast: Private Fields for Reactive & Anxious Dogs

Figo is brilliant in most situations, but hand him a shared path with an unfamiliar dog charging up off-lead and he gets loud and worried before I’ve even clocked what’s happening. We manage it, but “well managed” on a shared trail still means scanning every bend — which is the whole case for a secure field: somewhere fully fenced, booked for us alone, where the only variable left is the weather.

So when it came to Belfast, I went looking properly — checking the operator’s own website and booking system rather than relying on a directory blurb. If a secure field isn’t quite what you need and you’d rather have someone else take your dog out for a calmer, one-to-one walk, our guide to dog walkers in Belfast covers that option too.

The one we could verify

  • The Dog Paddock, 54 Ballyhanwood Road, Belfast, BT5 7SN (Castlereagh Hills, east Belfast) · Google Maps. A private, two-acre field with obstacles for dogs to explore and a picnic table and bench for owners. Booking: online, in 25- or 50-minute slots exclusive to your own booking — you choose the date, time and number of dogs, then receive a confirmation with an access code. Friends with other dogs can join if specified at the time of booking. Price and dog limits: not published on the site itself — confirm current pricing and any limit on numbers when you book, or by phone on 00 44 7825 146666. Rules: arrive on time for your slot, and leave promptly at the end so the paddock is ready for the next booking. Source: thedogpaddock.com, verified 18 Oct 2026.

We also found Belfast City Council’s Ormeau Park dog park and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s fenced area at Billy Neill Playing Fields in Dundonald, both covered in our guide to local dog walks in Belfast — but neither is privately bookable for exclusive use, so they don’t belong on this list. They’re free and fenced, which makes them a good lower-cost alternative at quieter times of day, but there’s no guarantee another dog won’t be there too.

What to check before you book

  • Price and any dog limit. Neither is published on The Dog Paddock’s own site, so confirm both by phone or at the booking stage before you commit.
  • Fencing height and type. The site describes the field as “secure and private” without giving a fence spec — email or call ahead if this detail matters for your dog.
  • Settle the journey before you open the boot. Figo travels better and arrives calmer when we’ve taken the edge off the car journey in advance — we use Calmdogs’ calming treats about 30 minutes before we set off.
  • If the reactivity is sudden or new, that’s a job for your vet first. Speak to your vet to rule out pain or a medical cause — see our list of the best vets in Belfast if you need one — and ask for a referral to a qualified, force-free behaviourist or trainer if it continues; our Belfast dog trainers page is a starting point.
Is there a secure dog field in Belfast?

Yes — The Dog Paddock on Ballyhanwood Road, east Belfast, is a private, two-acre field bookable online in 25- or 50-minute exclusive-use slots.

How much does it cost to book a secure dog field in Belfast?

The Dog Paddock doesn’t publish its pricing online — confirm the current rate and any limit on the number of dogs when you book, or by calling ahead.

Are secure dog fields good for reactive or anxious dogs?

They’re designed for exactly this — a privately hired, securely fenced field means no chance of an off-lead stranger’s dog approaching yours. It’s a space to practise calm, not a substitute for advice from your vet or a qualified behaviourist if the reactivity is new or sudden.
