Figo and I hear this question a lot, wherever we’re researching: what’s actually the difference between a dog walker, a dog trainer and a pet sitter? Worth being clear before we get into who’s actually out there in Belfast. A dog walker takes your dog out for exercise, usually on a set schedule while you’re at work or away for a few hours — walking is the whole job, not teaching. A dog trainer works on behaviour and obedience: recall, loose-lead walking, reactivity, puppy foundations — see our Belfast dog trainers page if that’s what you actually need. A pet sitter looks after your dog (and often other pets) in your home or theirs, typically for longer stretches such as a work trip or holiday — our round-up of dog sitters in Belfast covers that. Some businesses do more than one of these, but it’s worth checking which one you’re actually booking.
This guide is about walkers only, and specifically ones with a genuine, checkable presence in Belfast. I went looking for businesses with their own website, a Companies House record, or a solid directory listing — not just a name on a freelance marketplace app with no way to check who’s really behind it.
The honest picture for Belfast
We couldn’t find a standalone, independently checkable dog-walking business in Belfast with its own website clearly describing walking services and a confirmed local presence. What we found instead was almost entirely freelance-marketplace listings: individual profiles on Bark, Pawshake, Gudog and Rover covering Belfast, east Belfast, south Belfast and the wider Castlereagh and Lisburn area. These platforms let anyone sign up with no independently checkable insurance or disclosure history behind the listing, so in line with our usual approach we haven’t named individual freelancers as recommendations.
We also found Best Bark (bestbark.co), a Belfast-founded dog-friendly directory and Visit Belfast’s official dog-friendly partner, which lists verified dog services across Northern Ireland including walkers, groomers and trainers. Its dog walker category page was empty at the time we checked, with no Belfast-specific walkers listed — worth another look if you’re reading this later, since the directory appears to be actively building out its listings.
If you’re looking for a dog walker right now
- Marketplace platforms (Bark, Pawshake, Gudog, Rover) do have genuine walkers covering Belfast and the surrounding area — we’re just not naming individuals we can’t independently verify. Use the platform’s own review history and ask to see proof of insurance before booking.
- Check Best Bark’s dog walker listings (bestbark.co) in case new verified businesses have been added since our research pass.
- Ask your vet or a local dog trainer for a recommendation — a word-of-mouth referral from someone who’s actually used a walker is worth more than a star rating. Our Belfast vets page is a good place to start if you don’t already have a practice.
What to actually check before you book
- Public liability insurance — ask to see proof, not just a claim on a profile. A reputable walker will have this ready to share.
- Disclosure/AccessNI check — ask specifically rather than accepting a vague claim, especially if the walker will need a key to your home.
- Group size and compatibility — ask how many dogs are walked together at once, and how they’re matched for temperament and size. If your dog genuinely can’t cope with other dogs nearby, a group walk isn’t the right fit — our guide to secure dog fields in Belfast covers the solo-hire alternative.
- A settling-in period — most dogs take a walk or two to relax with someone new, and it’s completely normal for a nervous dog to need a bit of extra reassurance that first week. A calming chew alongside the introduction can take the edge off those first few sessions — we use Calmdogs calming treats with Figo whenever he’s meeting someone new.
Is there a standalone dog walking business based in Belfast?
We couldn’t find one we could independently verify through a website clearly describing walking services and a confirmed local presence. Most search results were freelance-marketplace profiles, which we don’t name individually.
What’s the difference between a dog walker, a trainer and a pet sitter?
A dog walker provides regular exercise on a schedule; a trainer works on behaviour and obedience, usually in sessions rather than daily visits; a pet sitter looks after your pet while you’re away, which may include walks but is really about cover and companionship.
What should I check before hiring a dog walker in Belfast?
Ask to see proof of public liability insurance, ask specifically about an AccessNI disclosure check, and ask about group size and how dogs are matched for compatibility — especially important here given how many listings are individual marketplace profiles rather than established businesses.
