Red kites were reintroduced to the Chilterns in a programme that ran from 1989 to 1994, and today they wheel over the hills in numbers that would have been unthinkable a few decades ago. Buckinghamshire sits on the southern edge of that landscape, with beech woods, chalk slopes and quiet villages.
Milton Keynes, in the north of the county, is a very different place, with grid roads, lakes and plenty of green corridors. The two halves of Bucks suit different dogs, and different kinds of help. Trainers, vets and swimming all have county pages. Milton Keynes has its own sitters and groomers pages, but nowhere else in the county does, so those fall back to our UK-wide directories. Rescue and pet transport do too. Nothing here is a full list of local services.

Chiltern trails and the kite effect
Places such as Aston Rowant and Stokenchurch are good spots to see red kites, and the Chiltern paths are a pleasure for a long walk. Beech woods can be slippery with leaves in autumn, and chalk paths turn greasy after rain, so check your dog’s footing and your own.
Many Chiltern routes cross farmland and nature reserves with their own dog rules, so follow signs and keep your dog on a lead where asked, especially near grazing animals and in nesting season. In Milton Keynes, the linear parks and lakeside paths are easier going, though cycle routes cross many of them.
A daily extra for active dogs
If you run the Chilterns trails or MK’s network of paths with a dog, build up the distance gradually. The Calmdogs 8-in-1 multivitamin chews at Calmshops are one daily supplement you could look at, and your vet can tell you whether your dog needs one.
